Stop me if I am wrong, but wasn't what was practiced by most native Americans before the arrival of Europeans defined most closely with current definitions of society as socialism?
I agree, but they were fairly small groups that depended on each other for survival. Socialism would work if you eliminate greed.

Good luck with that!

I work in market research, which means I talk to people of all walks of life on all kinds of topics related to decision-making and motivations (even in B2B settings). I've been doing this for 15 years and can tell you, without a shred of doubt, that greed (I'd actually use the term self-interest) is what drives EVERY decision humans make. People want to know that they'll come out ahead - financially, materially, emotionally, or otherwise - in any situation. Who goes into a negotiation to lose or break even? Where's the motivation to invest effort if you come out with the same or less than you put in? The problem with socialism is that you're banking your existence on the hope that everyone in society will permanently extinguish their urge for self-interest and simply contribute their best always. It just doesn't work because people quickly realize that the outcome is the same whether they contribute or not. So, in enlightened self interest, they think, "Why bust my ass contributing when the outcome is the same even when I don't?" As more and more people come to this realization, the system slowly grinds to a halt. All socialist systems will fail eventually...some just take a little longer than others. As my FIL once said, "Socialism is great...until you run out of other people's money!" I'm not sure that capitalism is the best alternative because it does result in haves and have-nots. But, let's be honest, so does socialism!

Not a lot of Meat-to-Bone Ratio on that puppy. Everybody knows the MtBR is the key stat.

... damnit although that does kind of kill chicken wings too.
Maybe buffalo sauce is the key to eating puppies.
