NC4X4 Hunting and Fishing

Man that sucks. I lost one in college that I guys shot and not being able to find them is the worst. Maybe the buzzards will find him for you so you can at least get the rack.

This is not true.

Email I sent to the game warden of my county last night:
I know you guys are busy but this comes up every year. I need to convince some fellow hunters that it is trespassing to go on to private property, without landowner permission, to look for a wounded or dead deer. They keep telling me that they can call the game warden and he will make the landowner let you look for the deer. Is this true? Can you make a landowner let them look for their deer on his private property? Can you make the landowner allow you to escort the hunter onto their private property to look for a wounded or dead deer?


His reply:
"They are wrong. Very wrong. Neither a game warden, deputy sheriff, hunter or anyone else can "MAKE " a landowner give them access to a piece of property for the purpose of recovering a harvested deer.

I would use the time tested method of asking permission to enter a person's property in a respectful manner. If they still refuse, there is nothing you can do about it."
 
My first kill of the season, a small 4 pointer, has three on the right side and a spike on the left.
So I hear this guy sneak up behind me Sunday morning before sunrise. I knew he was heading straight for my corn pile. Right before daylight broke I saw a bigger, older buck cruise right on through my corn without even taking a bite, I guess he had somewhere else to be that morning and didn't have time for breakfast. Well to say the least I was bummed about him passing through without giving me any time to shoot and I waited a while to see if he would come back but he didn't. And a few minutes later this small buck trotted away up the hill. I figured that was going to be the end of my day but a few hours later, right at 9am, this little buck decided he didn't get enough for breakfast and came back for seconds. Well I figured if he was going to offer up another easy shot I wasn't about to refuse it. :D
After making my shot I went home to change and grab a bite to eat and when I got back my dad and I took his new German Shepherd puppy to help track the blood. She lead us right to it like a pro and this was her first time doing anything like that. I thought that was pretty cool.
Anyway I quartered him up and took everything except the loins to Mount Airy meat center and had it ground into burger.
I'm going back out this weekend and hopefully I'll see that big buck again.

Hmm. I guess you are correct and I was wrong. I'm still trying to find the exact NC law that states that since your response was posted to another message board verbatim way back in 2015. I've read through the NC Landowner Protection Act and can't find anything that relates to it. I guess I got confused with hunting dogs/recovering wounded/dead deer from another property. I know the places I hunt down east, we have a pretty cordial relationship with the neighboring farms and if they see my truck or the landowners truck they have no issues with it. They hunt as well and have been known to cross lines to retrieve game if needed.

Yes a dog owner can retrieve their dogs. I don't even like that law because I don't think anything trumps landowner rights.

They are fun if you go with a decent club. I’ve learned to get along with them. They push deer onto some of our leases.

I’ve also hunted with a couple different clubs and most I would hunt with again given the chance.

@Loganwayne, I have no issues with people/clubs hunting correctly. I've gone rabbit and coon hunting with dogs and it has been a blast. However, I don't see myself ever hunting deer with dogs. We have had a lot of issues in the past down east where certain clubs that surrounded a few prime hunting spots(our property) would turn their dogs out on their land, run them through ours and back onto theirs. I cant tell you how many times I've been sitting in a stand at prime hunting hours and had a pack of deer dogs start baying and run right under my stand. Ruins my hunt for the day and all that time and effort is wasted. When you invest $1000s of dollars and time into developing hunting spots through blinds, cameras, and food plots, you quickly get pissed off at dog hunters.

It's not the dogs fault, they are doing what they were trained and bred to do. We have had numerous run-ins with hunters trespassing on our property to "retrieve" their dogs and when hunting season is over, we usually get one or two cull dogs(poor hunters) that were released and never picked back up because they didn't want to feed or take care of them.
 
Buddy shot one last night hit the ground and kicked, got up hit the ground again and kicked around he said if it stood up again he was gonna shoot it again. It stood up and he give it another, it hunched up and dragged itself into the woods. We didn’t find any blood or drag marks in the woods last night, we spent 4 hrs looking. gonna look for it again in a couple hours.

He passed on the buck twice saying he was going to let me have a go at it. I got stuck in traffic on my way down so I hunted at a stand that was easier to slip into late. Either way I hope we find it. I don’t see how it lived it looked like a tiller had went through the field where he pushed and kicked himself into the woods

First time out this year

Put the smack down on the mallards this morning. My buddy and I both had our 2 5 mins after legal light. I've never had duck's on me that thick. We had probably 70 come in on us. It was insane. That hole used to have mostly wood ducks and maybe 10 mallards would come in an hour or so after light. I bet we didn't see 10 woodies this morning.

Wasnt too bad. Started out in a tree stand but the wind was too much for that spot. So I just walked down the roadbed and picked a tree lol. Didnt see anything, but I'm set up on a scrub line.

I used to work with @ORV design and fab 's uncle Bill who always told me stories of how his dad would shoot from the bedroom and wake up his wife. Shot right through the screen and killed a ton of deer this way.
 
I went out the side door to feed and water the dog that was in a doghouse full of weeks old puppies, inside of the back screen porch before going to work one early morning.The sliding door to the screen porch was jacked up and I
would have have woke up them all If I tried to open it.It was almost november and bout 40*. I had some corn in the backyard cause I recently saw some decent bucks close to the house. I opened the backdoor w a gallon of water and a bowl of food and saw a buck in the corn. I went back in the house and grabbed my bow. I hunched down and snuck back out the backdoor to my truck about 20 yrds from the door and about 25yrds from the buck.I stood up and drawed. The buck raised his head and looked at me and I let the arrow fly. He went about 75 yrds and that is the only buck I've ever killed barefoot, in my underwear.......
