Got a 01 Merc Mountaineer 5.0, auto trans (4r70W) with AWD crap..
need a transfer case to bolt to it..
Obviously manual shift case, none of that electric crap.
Option 1: bw4406 is one option (97+ F150s/expeditions)
Option 2: BW1356 also seems to be an option?!?!
Maybe Option 3: I've read about adapting a Dana20??? but couldn't really follow what all was involved...any input??
NP208? NP203? NP203/205 doubler?

Motor will be around 280hp when I'm done with it so need a case that will handle that plus Tons and 37-40s(unsure on tire size until I get building on it and pick my belly/ride height). Currently thinking 37s to keep a stock 35spline shafts almost bullet proof hitting the rev limiter. It's gonna be a nice v8 build but nothing extreme, just a big step up for me.
Open to Doubler Options as well, I want gearing but def DO NOT want to sacrifice pinion weakness so I'm thinking 4:56/4:88 in axles lowest unless I figure out a doubler option.
Thanks for input/ideas!!

and WOOO FREAKING HOOO to building a rig on a Frame when all this begins!!!! lol

I have nothing to offer other than there was/is a badass Merc build on pirate. Likely has some info in that thread if it's still there.

I've got nothing to offer on the TC swap, but you need to start a build thread with lots of pictures. This is definitely different, and sounds fun!

Maybe try posting over here:

I will once building starts lol. Right now I've got to get it running (been sitting for years), drive the 'quirks' out of it and most importantly get caught up on some work. It's def gonna be fun...I've had my mind on a v8 rig for a while now and a frame to build on hahaha.

yeah i've been all over the interwebs lol getting info on these T-case swaps...so far I'm leaning towards bw4406 cause it fits in the frame rails better than the 1356...."oh my did I just say 'frame' rails!!!" LMBO

yep been reading through all the ford forums on this t-case swaps.
Just found out Northwestfab makes a input shaft for the D300 to the ford trans so that opens up another option and it's not outrageous. And apparently (unless I misunderstood) that adapter fits 96 and newer np231/242 from one of the guys build thread...that would be nice option too

A Ford D20 like those found in an early Bronco needs a lot of money in adapters to work. An Atlas will bolt up to it :)

I don't know about the chain driven cases but have seen some break. I'd stay away from them. A 300 might be a good choice if it will work easily. A 203/205 is expensive, long, and heavy

yeah I seen that and nope, WAYY too much money for all that crap. Atlas? would be nice but out of budget.
as for the chain cases, are the BWcases any stronger than the Jeep np231 in stock form?
Also not "overly" concerned with the chain case weakness as I've learned adding 2 extra mounts to them to keep em solid as can be greatly has improved my current 231 from breaking/splitting apart under lots of torque like they're known to do so I'm not completely opposed yet to using one. That's why I'm starting this build plans early...
This will be first "build" that is thought out rather than just cobbled together with parts LOL

1356 can be easily doubled if you have the length.

Np208 can get a 32spline output. You can mix it with a dodge case to get a fixed rear yoke.

My vote with be 1356 to 205 doubler.

I would also recommend going 5.13 or 5.38 in the axles, if spending the money. Plenty of people are running those ratios with no issues, and getting beat. Also this would let you get away with not needing the deeper tcase gears up front, or at all.

The 1356 fits in between frame rails with cutting the frame bottom a little.. is this case any stronger than the 4406 being still aluminum chain driven case
