Repostdddd...........Anyone know what type of locker it is or what possible optional gear ratios could be? I believe it is a HD 9.5"

The "Gov-bomb" /G80/Gov-Locker is made by Eaton. It is the same as their "M-Locker" on their website here: http://www.eaton.com/Eaton/ProductsServices/Automotive/DifferentialsLockingDifferentials/PCT_314766

It is generally the weak link, and quite literally a ticking time bomb in the 10 bolt application, it has been known to shoot shrapnel through the diff cover, completely lock up taking out the transmission with it, etc in even stock applications. But in the 14 bolt 9.5, 10.5, and 11.5 it is actually a decent piece.

As far as gear ratio options, 3.08, 3.23, 3.42. 3.73, 4.10, 4.56 are common OEM GM ratios depending on if we are talking fullsize/midsize truck, suv, hummer etc.

You can find the G80 locker option listed on the RPO code list in your glove compartment, along with the gear ratio code, GU4=3.08, GU5=3.23, GU6=3.42, GT4=3.73, GT5=4.10, HC4=4.56.

Thanks, I believe it has 3.73 gears I assume would be decent for occasionally towing a ton or 2 and slightly better on gas than a 4.10 in a 295hp 5.3 4wd dd ?

Depends on how the truck is set up and what size tires are on it. I know my truck would do better and probably get better mileage with 4.56s than the current 4.10s, but my cam also dictates the best operating range for the motor in my truck.

3.73s should be fine though. I'm guessing it's a 2500 light duty, but are you sure it's a 5.3? Most I've seen had a 6.0.

The GovLock in my 11.5 rear is about on its last leg. Thankfully, I picked up a used Grizzly Locker from the good guys at ECGS and it will be going in there soon!

5.3s were available with the 2500LD, but not in 2006 I do not think. He never said it was a 2500, just that it had a 14SF, which also came in 05 VHOs and 06/07 vortec max 1500s, though that would have had a 6.0 as well. My guess is he is possibly mistaken on which rear axle he has?

I believe this truck was ordered w these options, HD towing pkg, 9.5 locker, and snowplow pkg. It is a 1500 w a 295hp 5.3................................just found out its a 3.42

What makes you think it has the 14SF 9.5? I don't think the 14SF 9.5" was ever offered with anything but 3.73 or 4.10 in these trucks. Sounds like you have the 8.6" 10 bolt. Take a picture of the housing, and possibly also the RPO sheet in the glove compartment so we can be sure.

The options lists " HD Rear locking diff, Hd trailering equip pkg, handling trailering suspension pkg. It will probly have stock 265 70 17 tires if I buy it, it needs tires. I'm gonna go see it today and find out what rear end it has, I assumed "HD" means bigger than standard differential? or is that refering to the locker?. I can count the bolts when I get there. I also assume I would hurt the MPG if I put 275 or 285s on it so I might haveta keep them stock. It will be a dd and occasional boat tower, boat and trailer about 2000/2500#.

"HD......" doesn't really mean squat. And there is nothing heavy duty about that G80 locker in a 10 bolt  Do you have a link to the ad? And yes, you will really feel it with the 285s on those 3.42s, but it will be tolerable and still be able to tow that boat.

I'm afraid it does have a 10 bolt. It has 6 lug wheels. The truck has under 100k and apparently was hardly used to tow at all and never offroad. Should I balk at the weak locker timebomb issue?

6lug has nothing to do with it being 10 or 14 bolt, the 14SF was offered with 5, 6 and 8 lug through the years. The 10 bolt G80 is just one of those things you always have in your head, it could go at any second, it could go 400k miles.

Checked it out, 10 bolt rear has a slight leak at the pinion and the cover but it is tight and was barely warm after a 20min. ride and about 8 miles of highway and a litlle doggin. I think I'm goona buy it if the bosslady likes it :D
