hey man, the eaton would be an awesome axle!! If I found one I would use it with the 14 bolt parts. You could shave it easier than a 14 bolt for even more ground clearance. Either choice, however, would be good!!!
I have a couple of friends that have eatons. I have a 14 bolt. I like eaton axles. Pretty much a 14 bolt with a drop out 3rd. They came with 4.56 or 5.13 so you could find one already geared the way you want. Better clearance than a 14 bolt and all the 14 bolt parts work on the eaton axle.
Another good thing I can see about the Eaton is if you ever build a truss for it, you can tie a truss into the cast centersection of the regular 14b, but since the Eaton is a stamped steel housing it would be very easy to do.
Plus, being able to setup the gears on the workbench is nice too.
-find a third with 4.56's or 5.13's
-swap the carrier out with your choice of a 14 bolt detroit or welded spiders
-use 14 bolt shafts
-buy a bolt-on disc brake kit for a 14 bolt that has the tube spacers(cut them down)
-3/4-ton chevy rotors, 1/2-ton chevy calipers
-use 14 bolt spring perches, link mounts, etc.
-shave it for more clearance
I have access to atleast 3 of these locally. I'm gonna gonna check them all to see if they are 5.13. What I'm looking for now are disc brake brackets. Anyone know a company that makes them?
