I have a 2002 1500HD and the carrier bearing is shot. The truck is a daily and a tow rig, reliability is all I really care about (and not spending a bundle).

Should I swap out the carrier bearing or swap to a 1pc? If 1pc. Any good shops in or around Raleigh/Durham that can make one or is it an on the shelf item from somewhere?

What wheelbase are we working with here? ECLB, CCSB, or CCLB? I'd always go for a 1 piece when possible. Pull a measurment and call Oliver's or somebody like that.

Although, we're probably talking 500 to 600 bucks for a new shaft. It's gunna be fairly long and a large diameter. I'd probably do it if it were mine. I just really don't like 2 piece rear shafts.

Best place in Raleigh/ Durham is Triangle driveshaft.

Russell is a great guy, and does good work.

All the 1500HD's are crew cab, short bed....but it is a ~6.5' short bed.

Should be able to find a 1 piece aluminum shaft that will swap right in.
That's definitely true in the Duramax world, but I don't know if they used a 1 piece aluminum in these. Never studied up on them much since they're kind of a bastard setup between a ½ and ¾ ton. I'm fairly certain an NP261/263XHD has a larger output shaft than a standard 261/263HD...but I could be wrong. If it'd fit, then that'd be even better, but I know they use a 1410 joint. I don't believe those do.

Regardless, going to a 1 piece shaft is definitely achievable.

Yea, GM did alot of dumb shit in the early 2000s, hence the bankruptcy  I ve had 2 1500s 1 with steel 1 with aluminum, 2 tahoes both steel, 4 Duramax 2 steel 2 aluminum.

He may just get lucky and find a direct fit

If the truck is stock height I see no issue with a 2 pc shaft. I honestly think 2pcs shafts in trucks get a bad rap because of cheap/shit carrier bearings and running them at higher angles than they like to be ran. Personally I'd just put on a new Neapco/AAM/Spicer bearing and rock out (unless you find a good used one). If you do want a 1 piece you likely could snatch one used (my 2500HD ccsb truck is a 1 piece aluminum shaft), order a 1 piece ($600-800) Aluminum or have steel one made ($500-600 🤷🏽‍♂️)
