Hey everyone, I have a:

1980 CJ5
Straight-6, 258

I am having a problem with [[Blueish tinted]] smoke coming from my exhaust. It started about two months ago after a ruff off-roading trip. At first I thought it was water in the gas, then maybe the intake drank a little too much, and now maybe a piston ring or valve. I have no idea, I have done/changed the following since the problem occurred:

-Gas treatment
-New fuel filter
-Changed oil
-Ran the engine for a while to “dry it out” (was told it could have been a little moisture in the engine)

I am thinking my fun trip off-roading could have blown my engine. What do yall think and what should my next step be? (I am not driving it at the time, its been sitting at the house for a while). When I started it up this week it didn’t smoke as bad as 5 weeks ago when I last started it.
Thanks
-Opey

its getting harder to see now that i changed the oil and gave it a few weeks, but its got a blueish tint to it. the oil was dirty before i changed it, when i changed it became a little lighter. this makes me think its oil.
thanks

sounds like a busted ring on a piston

GAH!!! i was not wanting to hear that answer ha ha. so what can i do to make sure thats the issue? how hard would it be to fix it myself? any idea on how much $ to have it fixed? thanks for your help

I dont know what it would cost to fix it but it sounds like an engine rebuild to me. You might come out cheaper by finding a good used engine on here.

fire bombing the whole Jeep is looking better and better lol.
either way im look in the $1000-$2000 range then? the smoke is not all that bad now, you have too look for it. it was real bad about 5 weeks ago, and it seems to burn more the longer the engine is on.

time for a sbc & tons!!!!

well now that i see i'll prob be spending more mnoney on this jeep than i bought it for, i might as well go all out or sell it broken. how hard is it to convert a CJ into a diesel? also i have never changed out an engine in my life, but im up for the challenge, seeing i have some friends that would help.....i hope lol

Thats a pretty good deal. I know her and her husband. They are good people. I run a 360 with a 727 and a dana 300 transfer case. I did not even have to change my drive shafts. My original stock set up was a 258 straight 6 with a T5 tranny and a dana 300 transfer case. If you have the same original setup then that would work out perfect for you. Not a very hard install at all. PM me if you want anymore advice on tat install.

For Chits and Giggles, what tranny?? Also, check oil level. If over full smell it, see if it smells like gas. If an auto, might be modulator spewing tranny fluid thru the carb.

If it's a 5 speed it's a T-5

Check the oil and smell it, if it smells like gas, it is most likely your fuel pump gone south. Cheap fix.
If not, sounds like wore out engine bore and rings.
To check you can do a compression check, and a leak down check. They will tell a storie.

when i get back home i will check it out. where can i get a comp check? and if it could be the fuel pump would that explain why the smoke has not been that bad since the oil change?
thanks for your help

I thought a little blue smoke from an 80 model 258 was normal. If mine quit smoking I would be concerned.
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but Jeep never put a factory 5-speed in a CJ-5. It is most likely a t-5 from a CJ-7. Not something you want to keep if you are thinking about putting in a v-8.
As far as the smoke goes, if the engine isn't making any new or unusual noises, or isn't using more oil than gas: keep running it. That thing is 27 years old, rings and seals leak. If it is still running good and your happy with the power, keep running it. Keep a check on fluid levels, and for gas or water in oil.

well now that its not a cloud following me around like a few weeks ago, i will prob not worry too much. but im worried as soon as i drive it around more than a mile at a time it will start to smoke like a bon-fire again.

::NEW QUESTION ON TOP OF THE SMOKE ONE::
i am leaking power stearing fluid like crazy from the box under the bumper on the drivers side. it seems to be leaking where the rod comes in to the box (around where the gasket could be????). whats a good attack plan for this problem?

so the smoke isn't when cold, only after a mile or two and you have a cloud behind you?

Is it coming from the tail pipe? or just from the jeep in general? could be as simple as a rear main seal or that leaky power steering hitting the exhaust and burning off.

You can get a seal from Advance or Autozone. Youll need to pull the box off to replace the seal. Its a pretty simple fix. Just ask for an input shaft seal for your powersteering box.
IIRC I had to ask for one off of a 75 jeep cj to get the right one. The one they had listed for my jeep was the wrong one.
