Yes, I'm posting this in the "newbie" section, you will soon find out why!
I just installed new ENGNBLDR chain set, water pump and timing cover in my 22RE. I've got the timing "roughed" in. I've actually driven it 60 miles so far. A couple of questions:
Where is this stupid connector you are supposed to short when checking the timing?
Second dumb question. Is the pin on the camshaft (and the slot on the sprocket) TDC or is the small dimple on the sprocket TDC? I think I may have used the dimple as the top dead center mark!
Right now, not shorting the connector, the timing is on the far left of the timing tab about 14* BTDC. It should be 5* BTDC. My distributor is rotated as far clockwise as it will go.
1. Should I first pull the distributor and move it one spline counter clockwise and look at the timing again?
2. If I did align the dimple instead of the cam peg and sprocket slot as TDC, can I unbolt the cam sprocket and move the cam to line up with the sprocket when it is at TDC?
The good part is I made the 29 miles drive to work and have no leaks! It seems to be lacking in power on the top end.

short the connector, it is on the driver side fender, looks like it should plug intp something but doesn't. there are 2 side by side and sit in rubber grommets on the fenderwell. they are probably floating free not in the gromets. short the one with 2 wires i believe brown and green, wire in between 2 holes. this should cycle your motor down if it doesn't your TPS is out of adjustment and it will throw a code which you can read inside w/ check engine light if connecter is shorted right. then set it to 5. the key on the crank is top dead center and the dimple is directly above it i believe. if you can't set it to 5 with it shorted pull the distributer and move it a tooth.

22RE Timing

Thanks for the replies...
After work I found and shorted the connector (the check engine light flashed 11 times?) and checked the timing. The best I could get was about 14* BTDC. So I pulled the distributor and put it back in one spline counter clockwise. I was able to get it to 5*. But now.... What a dog!!!!
I'm going to pull my valve cover and check my cam sprocket timing. It's probably off.
Thanks again.
Matt

I got it!!

I pulled my valve cover to recheck my cam was in TDC position....it was!
My throttle position sensor was way off! Once I got that dialed in, I jumpered the test connector, idle went down slightly, I could then adjust the timing to 5* BTDC!! Runs like a champ now.

Thanks for all who replied!!
What a learning experience.

Matt
