I posted this in Newbie Tech also but im puttin it here too. My 1996 Jeep Cherokee Country, 6 cyl., automatic, doesnt even try to turn over. The key goes all the way around and the lights and radio come on but the motor doesnt try to turn over. I think it might be because the shifter isnt goin all the way into park. Could this be the reason and if so any suggestions on how to fix it?

put it in neutral and see if it starts, you can also try moving the shifter back and forth will holding key switch in the start position, odds are its the neutral safety switch, new ones are pricey usually 150 bucks or so, you can adjust them slightly on the transmission, passenger side if I remember correctly. If you are cheep like I am you can take them apart and clean the contacts and see if that works

Tried movin the shifter back and forth but that didnt work. Whats this safety switch look like and how do i get to it.

Battery.

Check the fuses under the hood. Just look at all of them Had this prob a while back . It was the alt fuse. healights dashlights and everthing else worked

duh the lights and radio wouldnt come on if it was the battery.
That's a pretty sarcastic response to someone who's trying to help you......duh. It takes a lot more power to turn the starter than to power up lights and radio. Might be the battery, solenoid, NSS or even the switch but it sounds like you have it all figured out.:shaking:

ok then how come it cranks after i try it about 500 times. I've put a tester on the battery already and its good....so.....

aight i can do that theres one right up the road and what am i supposed to use to clean the NSS with

I am betting the neutral safety switch as well. And yes it is on the passenger side of the tranny towards the front.

did you try shifting to neutral and then starting it, also you have to have the switch pushed forward under tension like you are starting the car when you move the shifter slowly between park and neutral

ok guys i pulled the ignition out cause after messin with it some more it doesnt feel like its catchin anything. Turns out a piece had broke of in it!!! I got one from a friend of mine for free and gonna put it on tonight. I'll let u guys know if it fixes it. I really dont wanna drop $200 on a NSS!!!

ok the ignition didnt fit, he said it would but he was wrong. I bought a new one, $70 but got it for $33 with a friends discount and its runnin like a champ again. Goin to the URE's this weekend to tear it up.....
