don't know where to turn next. replaced the actuator. nothing. i replaced the 4wd switch in the dash, nothing.

it isn't even trying to shift. checked fuses and relays, nothing. any ideas?

Does the actuator move when it's plugged in but not installed, i.e. is the case jammed?

If not, sounds like it's time to get some wiring books and start troubleshooting..

well found a write up on google, it said to pull the 2, 24, and 4 fuses in that order. I did, now it shifts, but won't engage 4wd. I hear it shifting, and will shift back to 2wd and works. strange

Have you tried moving the burb back any forth? It could be in a bind. This lady I meet in Geenville was freaking out because her 03ish explorer was all the sudden driving funny after a loud noise and jerk. I tinkered with it and found that she has accidently hit the 4low button... I had to take it in a out of park and messs with it for about 5 minutes before I could get it to come out of 4wd.

there is a module under the dash that controls just that system IIRC. sounds like that may be the problem if removing fuses helped it may have reset it.

that TC is a POS.

you can find them used for about $150. The inside of the case has a lever that sifts from 2wd to 4wd and the collar wears out. This collar may be worn out and may be binding up and not letting it shift properly.

Also, do not actuate the actuator without having it attached to the TC. If you do, it will damage it.

How many miles are on the truck?

That transfercase has a bad reputation for the oil pump wearing a hole in the back of the case allowing all of the fluid to leak out. double check this as yous may have done this and caused internal damage. Just a month ago I had this problem on my surburban and had the whole thing apart and rebuilt it, etc.

I never checked if it shifted into 4wd before the rebuild, but I did see noticeable wear on the shift collar. That was replaced in the rebuild and it now shifts into 4wd. This MAY or MAY NOT be an issue, just something to check out.

good info thanks. i wanted to just get a 241 and have him shift it.

thats a good option and there are some write ups about the swap but you'd have to get different driveshafts, etc. and still have to put the shifter through the floor.

I found it cheaper and easier to rebuild the 246 than go through all of the changes that would be necessary and have it look good.

well, according to a mechanic i know, he says it is almost always the transfer case control module. where is this thing? i need to get it out to match it up at the junkyard. GM wants $400+ for it.

i think its under the column behind the knee boards on the dash

Found it and replaced it with a junkyard control module, no go. What pain in the ass
