I was reading around today trying to find what type of oil I'm supposed to use since mine didn't come with a manual.
I ran across this:
6 qts. And remember this...Jeep 4.0 motors have flat tappet cams that require ZDDP (Zinc) almost all oil companies have removed zinc since newer cars have roller cams and zinc has been related to premature cat failure. Our engines need at least 1100 ppm of Zinc. Several other Jeep owners and myself are running Rotella T 15w-40 it's actually pretty cheap oil and has plenty of zinc to protect our beloved straight 6 cyl. Also Fram oil filters are junk I've seen them collapse several times. I use WIX brand filters.

What do you guys recommend? What Brand? What viscosity?
(1999 TJ - 4.0L, I just bought it at 78k miles and have no clue what they used in it before)

i got a case of renegade 10w40 race oil. my boss buys it bulk. has zink and all that in it.. even using it in his brand new diseals.

plus i can get it 2.50 a qt. or 30 a case.

I use mobil1 10w30 synthetic for about 100k and have never had a problem with the motor at all

I use rotella in everything, but I have heard that shell pulled the zinc out of it too. No fact though, just a rumor.

I used whatever 10w40 and filter is cheapest. Its a jeep, not a racecar.

I sell AMSOIL. One of the few companies left (if there are many others) that have a very high zinc content, and legally allowed to do so.
Can't see myself ever running anything but this top echelon oil. I'm loving it.
