Ok here is the deal. Im about to pick up an xj as a project. It will more of a weekend rig that will hit the trails some. I will have a tight budget. I do not mind and will be trimming the fenders. Id like to fit some 33's I have seen this done with a 2 inch bb and some trimming. My questions are will this require a sye? Lets say I bought this kit from ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Car....c0.m245&_trkparms=72:543|65:12|39:1|240:1318 .... What else would I need? I know I would need shocks but is there anything else?

OR if I went with a 2 inch bb what would be the difference? any pros or cons of either?

TIA

You will not need an sye. You shouldn't need any thing else other than shocks. Ditch the the sway bars and wheel.

P.S. I got a set of 3.5 rustys coils for 75$ if you don't want to run a spacer.

great info i just got 2 xj's tonight . both with 3'' lifts on 31s and was wonderin some of the same info,i just have death wobble

^^^^^^^^^^^^Brandon knows his stuff! :driver:

^^^alignment could be the problem. also may need a steering stabilizer

it has a stabilizer i was cues trac bar wore out or sominlike that ima check everu thing out 2morrow but i dont know shit about jeeps but how hard could it be right ,

Eeh. Er... Wow.

Stabilizer just covers up vibes a properly setup steering doesn't need one.

check tire balance and alignment first off...

What kind of lifts? at 3" you might be getting some driveshaft vibes. Control arm angles are pretty steep at that height if you're still on stock arms.

If nothing's been done to address the trac bar then yeah that is something to do, I'd ditch the stocker for an adjustable and a heavier bracket. You can just redrill the hole in the stock bracket if you want the cheap way.

I have a 2" BB on my XJ (also on a budget). I got some new shocks (needed replaced anyways). I have 31"s, and I did the basic trim with cut and fold in the rear. I'm very satisfied with it's performance, rides way better than it did stock and the extra clearance is noticeable offroad. No SYE here either.

blahblah factory stabilizers are the norm.

They are. So are swaybars. I haven't had swaybars on my rig in years, no deathwobble. I've run without a stabilizer on at all. No death wobble on 33s and 4-5" of lift.

When my steering was out of alignment and when my lift height exceeded stock CA lengths, before I addressed my trackbar I got DW and other nasty handling habits.

I'll say it again. A stabilizer just masks the vibrations (covers up the problem). A properly setup steering will run without one just fine. Doesn't mean having one is "improper."

STEERING DAMPER(STABILIZER)
Definition: A hydraulic device similar to a shock absorber attached to the steering linkage to absorb road shock and steering kickback.
LOOKS LIKE IT DOES WHAT ITS DESIGNED TO DO
since were taking stuff off lets take the shocks off they just mask the bumps in the road ... should be fine without them.

i simply mentioned that a stabilizer may help him

Man, I never said it was wrong to have one- you did. I'm just saying that a steering that is in alignment, drag link and trac bar angles close, no worn TREs, tires balanced etc there won't be enough vibration that you need one or even really notice not having one. I've driven without shocks, you notice that. I've driven without a stabilizer and didn't notice a thing.

It does exactly what its supposed to do. Not having one just won't be the CAUSE of deathwobble. I promise. It may cover it up a bit, and buying a new one can make the steering feel better...for a while.

I'm just trying to save him some trouble, lots of people go through several stabilizers before figuring out that it was a worn bushing, TRE, etc...

I have yet to hear of a single XJ that had real death wobble where a stabilizer was the cause. Take the question over to NAXJA if you like- tons of DW threads over there. I'm not trying to be a dick, just calling it how I see it.

Oh, and this only comes from my personal experience with lifted XJs. I won't pretend to know about other 4xs so maybe on other vehicles it makes a bigger difference.
