Purchased my 17 y.o daughter a ‘00 Cherokee last year and ran great. As of lately it wants to overheat while idling. To the point that if she shuts it off it spits and sputters when we crank it back up. Engine stabilizes after a couple minutes. She recently also had the radiator bust while sitting at a drive through.

I attempted to burp the system the other night but found no air in the system.

I would like to upgrade the radiator fan as I’ve had some issues on the electrics connections.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Sorry. It’s the 4.0 I6.

Sounds like vapor lock. As for cooling fan, zj fan clutch and make sure electric fan is working.

Fan shroud in tact? Mechanical fan clutch have plenty of resistance? Electric fan coming on as it should?
Those are things I’d check first. Next up water pump.

the electric fan connection sucks. Something is wrong with the plugs nearest to the fan.
I would like to upgrade to a newer and aftermarket option and rewire the plug.
Any suggestions?

How would I test a vapor lock?

Don’t bother. I guarantee you it is. If you have a known electric fan issue, start there. That is a very important part of keeping a 4.0 cool. Those Jeep’s are notorious for overheating, it’s a relatively large engine shoved in a small space that doesn’t have a lot of air flow. So if just one of the things I mentioned in my previous post are off, it’s not enough to keep it cool.
