Common problem with the 4.0. Waiting for the fuel pump to prime can often help, or installing a check valve in the fuel line to keep fuel from running back into the tank.
No noises at time of turning over. Turns over strong, but is slow to fire. It seems logical that it may be a slow fuel delivery at the start. Once fired, it runs great. If I install a check valve in the fuel line, where do you put it?
Fuel thing sounds right. I was having the same problem too. I actually changed the coil and that worked. I wanted a hotter spark for my new exhaust system, and tune up. When I took the old coil off I noticed it was cracked. 100k miles it was worth changing. I think it cost about $40 for the accel coil. I you go for it don't forget to order the adapter wires too.
Its worth looking at but priming the pump is always a good idea.
I was having the same slow fire problem with my 96XJ and eventually I started having hesitation problems and random cutouts. It was the fuel pump. Mine slowly went out over a period of time.
