I have a friend who has a problem when shifting into gear (automatic). It seems to jump everytime its put into gear. He alos says the 4wheel shifter is extremely hard to shift between 2hi to 4lo. A mechanic told him that he needs to either rebuild oth replace the transfer case...sound correct or a line of BS????
Thanks

Is he trying to shift it into or out of 4wd on dry pavement and standing still? If so it would work better on dirt or while moving at @3-5mph.
Another problem is the shifter bushings(last time I changed mine were @20 bucks from the dealer I work for) wear out over the years.

He just got it a couple months ago and it had 70,000 miles on it. Looks stock and hasnt been off roaded much if any. I believe when trying to shift into 4wd is on pavement and stopped ( i havent tried). What would cause the jeep to jump when going from park into drive?
Thanks

Could be the linkage.
Try putting the trans in N while shifting from 2hi to 4lo and see if it will go. My XJ is a 99 and it is still a little tight going into 4lo because its never been used much.
