I do not have this vehicle in my possession, it is in PENN , belongs to a friend, who says her mech. can't figure it out because the 'computer' says there is nothing wrong.....

Vehicle will not idle from cold start unless you rev it hard (5000rpm) then it will idle, and is fine warm

my guess, with out actually seeing the truck, possibly bad coolant temp sensor, defaulting to -40° ? ( is what GM sensors do )

says is very gassy smelling when cold, and this has just started recently since the temps have taken a dive.

Not familiar enough with Ford to really diag with out being there.

anyone have ideas ?

TPS? Vacuum leak?

Its a shot in the dark without actually looking over the vehicle.

First things first, tell her to find a new mechanic that can prove to her what is wrong before he gives her 10 bad diagnoses and a $1000 bill to foot.

I think you should tell her to reboot the 'computer' and see what she says

Spark plugs maybe? I've always heard they are a bitch on those engines, so they could be the factory plugs.

i know its a long shot.

^true although its usually the COP (Coil on Plug)s with the 5.4L

but it also has " no codes"

I'm leaning toward stuck IAC or bad temp sensor. ( or both )

it's bad enough that it's pretty much undrivable, so it will be towed to dealer Mon.

she needs the truck for her business, and is loosing $$$ this weekend as a result.

the local wrench had his chance.

Yeah i believe she needs a mech. with a good scanner that can read sensors in real time and has knowledge of what the values should be. I would bet the dude has a basic codes only scanner, or thats the only part of it he knows how to use.

yup, thats what I told her, true diagnostics is the ability to interpet info presented, not just knee jerk a few codes and throw parts at it

Hopefully the dealer tech doesn't just see it as a customer bill and just throw parts at it as well, just to build the ticket.

I've told her to make them qualify each part they want to sell her ( why does she need it? because I think it's bad isn't a good enough answer )

If she can wait till monday I can contact the snapon dealer in the area and get her a qualified tech to help her in her area. PM her info(location and all)
