I am wanting to buy a 2001ish Grand Cherokee and I am not sure on which engine to get. Is the V8 better than the I6? MPG seems to be about the same for both. Any help?

Right now I own 3 inline 6s. 175K miles, 135K miles, and 118K miles. Those motors last forever. Still have great oil pressure on all of them. I've only had to change some sensors, but you'll have to change an electrical sensor on any motor.

I don't know about the V8s.

the V8's in the WJ's are OVC, verses the pushrod style in the ZJ's that last just as long as a 4.0 I6. the WJ v8's will last a fairly good time, but are very sensitive to oil types and oil change frequency which will determine the performance, MPG and life.

ps-a 4.7 V8 WJ is a blast to drive, a 4.0 I6 WJ is just, not a blast from my experience driving my friends WJ's, and the ones that have come through the car lot i work at

I have a 1996 5.2 L FULL TIME 4x4! Grand Cherokee for sale if interested. Very cheap, very dependable, no problems! 177k miles but im tellin you this is my 5th Jeep and the best one I have so far, the only reason I am getting rid of it is b/c I got a wrangler I am using as a DD now.

PM Me if interested.

the 4.0 for sure. Yes it doesn't have all the punch of the v-8's, but it's built to last, parts are cheaper. The v-8's are more complicated to work on as well. I don't know how skilled you are in fixing things but easier is easier lol. That just my two cents.

i'd agree with that, if you're looking to have the jeep for a long term. short term i'd buy a V8, long term i'd go with the trusty I6

I have a 2001 GC with the I6. 170K on it and its is still tight with good oil pressure and runs like a top.
Damn good engine.
