Has anyone done this in here? I have a wrecked 2002 Chevy Silverado with a FI V8 and I want to install the V8 into a 1981 CJ in place of the stock 258. Any info, sites, books or help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks, Larry

The mounts are a little different on the LS-based engines. You can use a regular Chevy V8-into-CJ kit and then use the readily available adapters to the new engine, or fab your own.

Jim's performance can do all your wiring harness and computer work (www.portfuel.com) for a VERY reasonable cost

Keep the 4L60E attached to the engine.

You'll probably need to convert the engine over to use the F-body (camaro) oil pan. ($250)

I'm putting in basically the same thing into my FJ, and for the cost, ya can't beat it. I've got under a grand (excluding the engine) in setting up my rig.. that includes the fuel cell, pump, hose, computer, harness, etc...

ls1tech.com has a TON of info.. use the search heavily.

It will fit fine. I've used Jim's performance 4-5 times myself, GREAT service. You will need the complete wiring harness from under the hood to send him. You can use an e2000 external fuel pump, or get the fuel pump from out of the truck tank. Fab up some motor mounts, get any chevy trans from a v8 and your set.

I have done this also but with a TBI 350 and a 4l60e it has work out great for me.
X2 on what Rich said

If you get the complete engine and body harness from the Chevy and run some aftermarket gauges, it'll be pretty straight forward. The GM wire harnesses are pretty simple. If you need GM wiring schematics let me know, I have access to all GM factory information.

Speaking of gauges - There are some gotchas by the way.. To run a coolant temp gauge sender from the back of the passenger's head, you need a metric to 1/8" pipe adapter, which fortunately can be had from the parts house, I've got the part # at home, I'll post it later.

For oil pressure, I drilled & tapped that nipple that's bolted just above the oil filter, put my sender in there.

Hey Gang- Thanks for the replies and valuable info.

This is the route I'm going... Please LMK if I am off course please.

I Talked to Jim at Jim's Performance and he'll be doing the wiring. I plan on using the 5.3 V8 and the 4L60E Auto Transmission with a Novak adapter to my Dana 300 Transfer case.

I would like the names of recomended Suppliers for Motor Mounts, Radiator, hoses, shifter, fuel pump and the other 23 things I still have not thought of.

thanks,
Larry

Motor mounts are easy to make. you can get an AL rad from summit 23x19 I think for about $180, and get plates welded on each end so it will fit in your grill shell. I always use pieces and parts of rad hoses from the parts store, bend a piece of wire and look through what they have in the back. e2000 fuel pump from parts store, or you can use an in tank pump from a 97 suburban.

fuel pump

ok, gonna do the same thing ('05 lq4) in the fall, so I have to ask- whats up the '97 burban pump? havent heard of that one yet.

Jim's got it, but I suppose any in-tank pump from a LS / Vortec engine'd vehicle would work.. Camaro, vette, silverado, tahoe, burb, yadda yadda?

Thx for the help guys. Two more quick questions. Power steering (will I have to make any changes or mods) and while I have the chance I might as well put some headers in (any good suggestions) Larry

I am doing almost the same thing. Already learned from this string. Wasn't sure if I could change to headers because of Sensors... Hope u get some quick respones bro.

Trig (U ain't far from J-Ville)

Power steering is a nice p-pump unit. Shouldn't be a big deal as long as you have the right fitting on your PS hose.

Can't help ya with the headers, but there are no sensors on my manifolds. I'm not running o2 sensors right now, the computer guy said they run well in open loop. That said, I kept the connectors in the wiring loom should I decide to add them in later... :D

Easy to do. Just got done working on my friend's but he has a junkyard under his hood. 77 AMC Matador 360, 90 GM TBI with ECM and wiring, Ford Distributer and a 1966 T-18E Tranny. All in a 84 CJ7.

Dang, revived a 2 year old thread?

Maybe can help people today, even if it is 2 years later. You found it didn't you?

Yeah, but what tech did you offer up about a LS-series engine?
