Got a friend with a 2002 Tundra TRD4x4 that might have a leaking water pump. Dealer wants $800 to change it.

He was asking me if it's a pain to change. If it was an older GM 5.7L I'd jump right it. I've done a little research and found out that his 4.7L V8 has 4 overhead cams and you have to pull the radiator, timing belt, etc. to even get to the water pump. It also is an interference motor, so you have to be very precice when timing the cams. Anyone on here done one? How much trouble is it?

How many miles are on it? I had one replaced under drivetrain warranty at like 45k or so in a '98 Taco. (Warranty is 50k). Not sure on time though. Tell him to go ahead and havethe timing belt and cam and crank seals done while they're in there. Even if it's only got 50k on it he's better off to do it now. Sorry that I don't know anyone who can do it though.

The truck has 102,000 miles on it (out of warranty). He's decided to take it to a shop here in the Raleigh area since there is so much involved and neither of us know anything about those engines. He just didn't know if he should try his luck picking a place out of the book or if others had good experiences with repair shops in this area. 5keepers, where do you work?
