i got a 95 toyota 22RE. its got about 6400miles on a complete rebuild. the check engine light comes on every once in awhile. itll stay on sometimes 20 minutes, sometimes 2 hours, sometimes 3 minutes. comes on about once every 2 or 3 weeks. i have a littel exhaust leak where the manifold bolts to the downpipe? i guess its called. this is because the guy that rebuilt it didnt tighten them up, i went wheelin, and they fell out. so i got a make due bolt/nut in it. also, i took off the dizzy and it and the rotar button is a little corroded. and the air filter is dirty. the throttle body is nice and clean. could any of these cause the CEL? i about t odo a tune up on it.

also, i put new plugs in it when it got rebuilt, should i go ahead and replace them again?

Pulling the codes in an older yota is easy, all you need is a paper clip. Jump the E1 and TE1 pins in the diagnostic connector on the passenger side inner fender. The code will flash through the check engine light like an OBD1 Gm system. (ie. blink blink blink blink blink = 23) Codes can be looked up online in many, many places, http://www.troublecodes.net/Toyota/ has a good list.

thanks a friggin ton!!!! i thought that i had heard talk of pulling codes on a yota somehow. cuz auto zone, advance etc cant hook it up until 96 and up. but will it still tell me the codes if the CEL aitn on at time i try to show the codes?

It should, with it being off and on I'd bet money on an O2 sensor fault, but it should pull it if the ECM has stored it.

IIRC if there's no code, it will just blink really fast.

This soudns liek it could also be a crappy connection at the AFM.
Eitehr eay, the codes will give you a direction to work in. Report back...

ok thanks! is it bad that i dont have a friggin paper clip to my name?

well i tried pulling the codes using the link that Demondave posted and got nothin. the CEL just stayed lit and didnt flash or nohtin. i used a bobby pin at first courtesy of the ole lady and got nothin, then i used a piece of copper wire. nothin. also, there was some kinda gel all over the insde of the diagnostic test thing. looked kinda like anti seeze you pu ton spark plugs but it was a light brown color. is this normal?

It's an anti corrosive grease. a paper clip or a piece of solid wire for 110v has been the only things I've been able to get mine to work with. Check the diagram on the inside cover for the connector and make sure you're grounding the right terminals. Aside from that they can be a little of a pain to get a good connection with your jumper wire.

yea i double checked to make sure it was in the right terminals and it was. ill ahve to grab a paper clip tomoro
