I was trucking down 321 heading to hickory when I noticed my 4 runner gettin weak. I downshifted to 4th then down to 3rd with the pedal to the floor.....still not going any faster. I turned down my raido and heard.... knock knock knock....I cut the switch off and pulled into a parking lot, My friend brought me some oil and I started the runner back up. It still has plenty of power but has a slight knock around 2 grand....

Anyone know what I messed up.. How extensive of a rebuild am I looking at?
The engine has a new head gasket and timming chain right now.

Do you think that it would be ok to change the oil and run some pretty thick stuff....half 20w50 and half Lucas?? Could I still drive it like that as long as I don't rev it high.... I don't want to mess up anything that isn't allready hurt..

I plan on a rebuild with an upgrade cam in the near future.

?

You can try it. The worse that can happen is for that rod bearing to spin and ruin (at the very least damage) the crank and lock the engine up. Give it a shot and see if it still makes a lot of noise.

if it was losing power something was seizing, i would put in rottella and lucas and look for a motor. unless you want to rebuild this motor and if you do don't drive it, b/c only worse thing can happen. ie rod through block

DO NOT go with I high vicosicty oil it will kill it faster drop some 5-30 or 5-20 in it you want the flow, NOT the pressure
as pressure goes up flow drops and you run the bearings dry.

Yo,
If its knocking, park it! Cheaper to fix now, but as bearings deteroriate the debris will scratch the cylinder walls and every thing else trashing the motor.
Axe me how I know about that......

thanks for the help. I'm lookin at buyin another runner that blew the head gasket. The bottem end of the motor is fine. I'm going to put my head on it.

Agree w/ above. Park this bad boy.
Aparently every now and again, tehse thinsg will throw out the #2 rod bearing if they don't get oiled right.
if you let it go, the bearing will strip out completely, then the rod end will bang around the crank journal and wallow it out making the crank unusuable.
Happened to me...

hey xxx

you ever check your oil? you said a friend
had to bring you oil. how much did it hold?
how about visualy inspecting your vehicle
before you ride?

bad dawg

My runner had the wrong dip stick in when I bought it. I found out the hard way.

pickin up the new motor next weekend. 5mge....I need a bellhousing for it. The car was an automatic. It's going to be hell sifting through all the wires for the swap....

I changed the oil and used 20w50 and some stp gummy stuff. It put a damper on the knock and runs better now. Hopefully it will be ok for a while. I can tell that something has gone wrong because it smokes a little at start up and you can kinda smell the oil burning...couldn't smell or se it before I ran it out of oil.
