I put an AirDog II 4G 165 on my truck a little over two years ago. No fuel pickup issues until about a month ago. Now when it gets right around 1/4 tank, it'll start sucking air, lope, and run rough in general. Seems like to me that the plastic corrugated pickup tube probably has a split in it. Has anybody has their hands on one of these sending units? I'd like to go ahead and order a new piece of tube or diesel rated submersible hose....but I have no idea what size or length I'll need.

If anyone could help me out, that'd be fantastic.

1/4" or 5/16" or 3/8" most likely if it's like most sending units/pickups.. size of the tube coming out is likely the size inside the tank would be my guess.. or just let it don't go under 1/4 tank..

Its 1/2" and you only need about a foot. On my 06 I used Kennedy pumps and his 5/8" billet pickup conversion. It's a little more work for your 02 than the later models.

On my 03 I used a 1/2" fass pickup that comes with their universal pump kits. It's the red thing below.

Yeah...that's pretty annoying. Especially when hauling a trailer or taking a trip.

@CarolinaHD I've looked at that, but I've also been leaning towards the cheap side and just replacing the hose and going on about my life. Now I need to get some submersible fuel rated hose I can replace it with. I damn sure can't find the corrugated plastic stuff anywhere.

I guess I just need to get in there and see what's wrong with it. I did consider buying another complete sending unit and swapping the whole thing out to minimize down time. I don't really feel like messing with modifying the sending unit...so I'll probably leave it how it is.

Should have mentioned in the first post that I will never put a sump on anything I own. I'll probably spend less than 20 bucks fixing the pickup hose and don't have to drill a big ass hole in a perfectly good fuel tank.

I definitely meant submersible both times.

Why not? What's your reasoning?

Also your tank isn't perfectly good if you can't get the last 1/4 of the fuel out, which is what you have right now 3/4 of a working fuel tank.

Drawing fuel out of it doesn't have anything to do with the tank itself, so yes, the tank is perfectly fine. Again, I'm betting the corrugated plastic tubing has cracked after a solid 17 years and 265,000 miles of use. It doesn't owe me anything.

My reasoning is very simple.
-Why do I need to spend 100+ dollars on a sump when I can spend less than 20 on a piece of hose?
-The factory pickup can suck all 26 gallons out of the tank from the top.
-I don't want to have to change my fuel hose routing/plumbing.
-The factory return is right there near the pickup so it helps keep the bowl full of fuel.
-I don't really want to drill a 3" hole in the bottom of my fuel tank.
-To me, they look as stupid as lift pumps mounted outside the frame and in front of the left rear tire.

Aside from all that, I just don't like them and I don't see it as a necessity.

You won't find the plastic corrugated stuff. The fuel rated rubber hose will be fine. I believe you're looking for sae 30r7. Yes, it's what you're looking for are after reading 30r7 Goodyear. Which that should be available off the shelf at any parts house.

I know that's rated for diesel fuel, but I'm not sure if it's rated for immersion. I'll have to check.

SAE 30R10 is what I found as the rating for submersible hose.

Wonder what the difference is. I had no clue submersion might be different. I figured if it carried it on the inside, the outside would be ok.. plus your application is not pressure.

Has something to do with the composition of the outer layer. 30r7 hose used in a tank will, apparently, swell up and rupture.
