Going to be dropping the gas tank on my 1996 Ram, it seems to be leaking from the top. I suspected it was just the seal at the locking ring, but it seems to be leaking (at least a little), all the time.

I need to be able to use the truck daily, I wanted to see if anyone had experienced this before, and what the likely culprit would be. (regulator, seal, simple hose). It would be great if I could drop, fix, and roll on with life, rather than drop it, then sit around waiting for a part for days.

This is the 39 gallon tank in a 5.9l....big, honkin' gas motor! Is it possible this motor has learned how to make fuel like the 5.9l diesel, and I just need a return line to allow for my own gas powered perpetual motion machine?

As the tanks expand and contract, the plastic locking ring can loosen over time. Seen it plenty of times.
Before you drop it, throw some baby powder up there a few days ahead of time to see where the leak is coming from.
Cue the flour and a fat chick punchline one 1,2,3...

I just had mine apart on my V10 last week, it was leaking around the plastic locking ring, and I believe at the regulator as well. I went ahead and replaced the whole assembly while I was there, mainly because my fuel gauge hasn’t read accurate the entire time I’ve had the truck. Now my gauge is correct, and no more leaks!

My fuel gauge is fairly accurate, looks like the regulator comes with a fuel pump seal as a kit and is readily available at Napa.
Funny, when you are trying to run your tank low, it seems to take forever, and when you don't want to fill it up, it hits E in no time. Warning light is on, so hopefully I am below 5 gallons.

Found this rubber cap that covers an aux. Vent tube on the pump....it was completely cracked, tossed a vac. Cap on there and found the tank was under pressure after driving around (but no leaks).

Bought a new gas cap, zip tied the vac. Cap on and filled the tank.....no gas smell or leaks!

$18 in supplies (I couldn't find my vacuum cap kit, had to buy new).
And I got to do it all sitting under the truck, no bed pull or tank drop.....I couldn't be happier!
