my buddy has a red 94 4runner. he found another one at the j.y. the guy that works there said that he'd sell him everything to swapit over. tranny, tcase, and front suspension.

is it even possible to swap it?
he said that his registration even says 4wd (as if it was swaped to 2wd)

so in relation, can you take a 2wd runner and make it 4wd?

I'd think so. You probably won't need the front suspension, just the diff/axles drive shaft. Does the donor vehicle have ADD? (Auto Diff Disco) If so, he'll need the electronics too. I believe there are a couple of relays etc. bolted to the drivers side fender down low in the engine compartment. (If I'm remembering the correct model here.)

his registration probably says its 4wd because the 2nd gen 2runners looked liek they were 4wd. if it was me, i would just SAS it and call it done

It would be a lot easier to do a SAS conversion than an IFS conversion. :huggy:

In fact i'll be doing just this in the next year

In the trucks, 2wd frames and bodies are a little different from 4wd, you won't have as much ground clearance.
But, since this was teh 1st time the bodies/frames split between trucks and 4runners, it may be that all 4Runners are the same and just the trans etc is different.
And yes you would need all of the front end, the A-arms are different, as are the wheel spindles (b/c the 2wd ones aren't mad efor an axle to stick through).
Even the oil pan on the 2wd is different from 4wd.

Personally I wouldn't do it unless you can get the WHOLE donor truck, not just select main pieces taken off by the JY. My bet is there's a lot of little things that they won't think about.

First step is to confirm existence of 2wd 4Runners in 2nd gen (I'm just not sure), 2nd step is to find out exactly what is different.
