Are the backing plates and drum brakes the same on a '87 3/4 ton chevy axle the same as a 1 ton? Not sure of the year of the 1 ton. If not, what to do with the emergency brake cable?

probably should have said that I was swapping out the axles, sorry. I had put the brakes on the 3/4 ton about a year ago and they are hardly worn and now I have the new 14 bolt

So you're replacing a 14 bolt with another 14 bolt? Just trying to get all the details before I try to answer.

Without knowing what year the "new" 14 bolt is from, it's kinda difficult to answer. From what I can tell you, you're gonna have a lot of bothersome work to do. Basically, just tear the brakes down and use the cables from your existing 14 bolt on the "new" 14 bolt if you can.

Personally, if you're not changing the gear ratio and your current axle is in good shape, then the marginal difference in stopping power and additional weight aren't worth the effort.

yes i am changing over a 14b to a 14b but, the one under the truck now is a 10.5with c-clip axles and i'm putting in a full float rear-end. But i still don't know what year the "new" axle is. Does this make a little more sense?

Ah, ok. That makes all the difference in the world. I'm with Lee. Ditch the drums and replace with discs unless you're going to be doing some hauling.
