Anyone able to rebuild a 16 hp Kubota D600 3 cyl? I have one on a lawnmower that I 'think' needs rebuilding, but not an expert here. Just let me know.

Thanks,
Shannon

I think we have a Kubota tech on the board here.

Ill Pm ya...

If it was me, I would take the motor to an automotive machine shop and ask if they can:
Turn the crank
Hone the cylinders
Knurl the pistons
Do the head
Tank the block
Reassemble the thing
Injector pump?????? may be ok for now
Injectors???????? may be ok for now
Normally the compressions rings wear out and the valves loose their ability to seal.

You may end up with a great motor for little change if the block is still good. Cylinder Head Specialties on US 1 north just before Hwy 98, on the right, is highly recommended.

$ 0.02

OK, spent some time on it this weekend, got it running, dead cell in the battery was one thing; got the radiator back in, new hoses, new battery, fixed a couple of the wires that were frayed, fuel filter, etc. I cracked the injectors and they all appear to be firing. I'm sure the old diesel might have gummed up some, so I let it run for quite a while with some power service in the tank to help clean things out.

So it runs and drives OK, but absolutely no power. It bogs down just trying to engage the blades (on the driveway) or going up the very small incline in the driveway. It is like it does not put more fuel in as the load increases. I see in the docs there is an electronic fuel regulator and a 'control box'. Would either one of these affect the 'bogging' down of the motor? Or cause this type of condition?

Might just need to haul it to a kubota guy? Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Shannon

Compression check

Injector timing

Compression rings good for about 2,000 hours so if you are close to that, time to overhaul....

If the machine needs a rebuild after 2000 hours, there needs to be some changes in it's PM proceedure.

operating 6.5hrs a day on a 5day week, is 32.5 hrs X 50 weeks is 1625 hrs a year. ( 2 weeks vaction, down time)

If I spent that kind of cash on a machine an it can't last more than a year before it needs a rebuild, I think I would be looking into a different manf.

I would expect much better of a Kubota

its a 1991 motor, in a walker lawnmower I picked up. Ran it for two seasons and it has been sitting for about 4 years. Hour meter is broken, so not sure on total hours, but it did come from a commercial operation, so no telling. I got the mower for less than what I can sell just the hydros for, so I can put some money in to it to have a decent mower for years to come.

Plus, it's a diesel lawnmower. That is pretty freakin' cool in my book. Turn the fuel pump, fuel plate, and stage 1 injectors and we'll be rockin.

Diesel mowers are the heat, I'd love to have one myself. ( more for durability /longevity than anything else. )

it was mentioned above about rebuilding at 2khrs, which makes no sense, is why I said what I did.

Being yours is a '91, I would suspect it has 20k hours on it ( a more reasonable assumption given the age)

As mentioned, a compression test would be of more benifit in diagnosing anything at this time. that it runs at all suggest it may be more fuel related (worn injection pump) but low compression can still be an issue, could also be a valve related problem. lot's of hypotheticals involved, the largest issue ..... How much are you willing to spend ?

I have a diesel compression guage, but with out seeing the enigne, I don't know if I have an adapter to fit that particular engine ( the list on the cover isn't complete)

If you are interested I might be coerced into coming to Fuquay, shoot me a PM

The injection timing is set by shimming the injection pump to the block, so I doubt that has been changed. Check the fuel pump. Some commercial mowers have a fuel filter inside the fuel pump. If it appears to have a screw-off cap on the bottom of the pump with a ground wire attached, it has an internal filter. It sounds like it's starving for fuel, I assume you have replaced the air filter.
I am very familiar with these small Kubotas, they are great engines and have been used in the turf industry for nearly 30 years.
20K hours? No way... These engines are good for 10K and no more... which more than out lasts the mower they are in.
Let me know if you need more help. I know some guys in Fuquay and Holly Springs that might be able to help.

yes, please fwd him my info or let me know his and I'll call him. I can haul to Hickory if he has time and is reasonable.

Thanks,

Walker MDDGHS serial #9211786
Kubota D600 3 cyl diesel, not near the mower tonight for serial number, but looks like any old D600.

Update: D600-B is the number on the block.

Thanks,
Shannon
