304 Rear Main - To Clock or Not?

What is this groups experience? I am reading both ways of clocking the rear main seal at 8/2 to help avoid leaks. I'd like to just do this job once. My friends are limited in AMC experience and also at odds on this decision.

Can't clock an AMC V8 rear main seal. The half that goes in the cap has "ears" on each side.
