My son's truck keeps shutting off when the temp gets to 165 thermostat temp. It will not start back until everything is cold. Then same thing. It does leak a little oil and coolant. Does not smoke. I feel like it's a sensor but not sure what one.

What kind of truck is it and what motor?

I'm far from an expert, but don't the HEI ignition modules some times act up and cut out when they get hot?

Wonder if it’s something in the electric choke

Coolant temp sensor is a possibility. Hit it with some starting fluid and see if it starts up. I had a TBI doing the opposite and it was the two wire sensor on on the front side of the intake with a yellow wire.

If you unplug the temp sensor will it run/restart?

The ICM on the distributor can go bad from heat as well. If it's replaced without a good quality heat sink paste, the new one will go bad quick also.

The tbi's *almost* fall into the old maxim: fuel, air, spark.

I would check the distributor coil. Are there engine bay mounted ignition relays?
