im about to run 36'' tires , 4cyl fuel injected an a couple other performance mod's on my 1990 yj. im debating whether to run 4.56 gear ratio, or 4.88 gear ratio.. any suggestions or ideas on what ya'll have done good or made mistakes on?

4.88 for sure! I ran 7.17s with a 4cyl and 38s and it wasn't too low. Course you couldn't run 70 on the Interstate either :)

I opted for 4.56's with my 36's...but then again, I'm running the 4.0L...also, my Atlas 4.3 makes up for it on the trails...

with a 4-banger, I'd definitely opt for 4.88, or even lower...5.13 maybe?

4:88's or deeper for sure.
I have a Jeepster with 4.3 V6, SM420, 36" IROKs, and 4:88's. I got a ticket for 68 in a 55 and wasn't even pushing it hard.
Off road it's good.

if you're keeping the 30 the lowest you can go is 4.88. i'm on 35's with 4.88's and i'm real happy with acceleration around town and on the highway i do about 2,800 rpm at 70mph. i only get up to about 75mpg top speed though, haha. so 4.88's will be good, if you swap axles and can go lower, go for it.

do you still have the 35 in the rear?

yup, that's a good idea, i blew my 35 up on 33's and went the 8.8 route. looking to go 36's so we'll have similar drivetrains. cept i have the coils :flipoff2: let us know how it goes

I have 33's on my girlfriends YJ with 4.56 & 2.5L and I think its a good combo
my buddys jeep has 33's 4.88 & 2.5L and I think it is a better combo
so with 36's I would go 5.13 but then again we dont drive ours everyday
and this is just my opinion good luck with it:driver:

Yep, I'd go 5.13s. 4.88s at least. My 2.5L has 33x13.50s on 4.10s and it's a dog on the highway. It still does well offroad and it isn't a DD, so it's fine with me. But if it was a DD, it'd be a horrible setup. I don't think 4.56s would be near enough. An axle swap is in the future, so I'm not wasting any $$$ on the D30/D35.
