I have an 04 TJ unlimited Jeep one ton that Rides in Conover, NC is just completing. This jeep is going to be on road as well as off road, my question is, can I put a chevy v 8 in it, change the wiring harness, and still pass North Carolina OBD inspection? If so can someone steer me in the right direction?

you can but the engine will have to be an 04 or newer, with all emmisions still in place

yes you can. i got a GM 5.3 in my TJ and it passed NC emissions test. i used the painless wiring harness. it comes with an OBDII port to mount under your dash inplace of the factory one.
you'll also wana get your vin# put into the new GM computer.

You probably won't get the 383 stroker to pass....Now you could do a fuel injected LS motor and pass quite easily, while building a much more powerful/reliable/efficient engine than most 383 strokers. Yes you will need to build custom motor mounts, and a larger rad would be a good idea.

Any tuner can program the vin into the computer, or you can even have a GM dealer do it with the tech II.

I got my motor mounts from advance adaptors. I used a radiator from a 69 camaro. (it has side mounts on the radiator like a factory jeep. I just had to redrill/move holes)
I also used a 5-speed tranny and trans case from a 91 chevy truck. (88-98ish has front driveshaft on driver side) NAPA has the u-joints (PUJ372) you will need to mate your jeep driveshaft to the chevy yoke on the tranny.

where is jims performance located and tell me about transmission adaprors, my tj/lj has the stock automatic? Also thank you all for the very usefull replys, im just getting back in the off road game, gave all this up for wife, house, and kids 20 years ago, im back and ready to play in the rocks.

also Jim's is located in Maryland 877-465-9569

There are a number of adapters that could be used for a number of different tranny, transfer case options, you could keep your trans, transfer case, and use an adapter to run a LS motor, or you could run the LS motor with a chevy 4l80e, 4l60e, and use an adapter to mount the Jeep tranfer case to the chevy transmission

its all in what you want to do

assuming you want to keep atleast a 4 speed auto, for overdrive perposes on the road, if it was an offroad only vehicle, then a th350, or th400 3 speed tranny would be the ticket

actually, not really. you cant swap a v8 into a chassis that did not have one as an option from the factory. BUT people do it all the time including me. I got hassled in CLT when I did my first v8 into a 1983 CJ, because the law says something like 'chassis' not 'year model' and in fact the CJ chassis had v8s available, just not my year. you can get this from the DMVs site.

I was a nc inspector and yes as i recall the vehicle must have a motor that came in that model. If you have a 4cyl but v8's also came and you put the proper v8 in i think it would pass. But a 383 stroker in to a tj your are going to have the pcm to read everything correctly

for the OBD it must be the same year model or newer motor.
If you havent already id look into a 5.3/6.0 swap as opposed to the 383.
