Long story short here....

Driving to Boone from Hudson, lights go dim...kill them, make it back to town with no lights.

Volt meter is on 8 by the time I get into town.

Installed new alternator, charged battery and it had 13.5 volts and 150 cold cranking amps.

Installed battery rig fired right up...volt meter still on 8.

Drove to class the past few days everything was fine, figured the guage had went south.

That brings me to today. Went to Napa to put it on the machine. It is NOT charging, and I barely made it back into the parking lot before it cut out on me.

What should I be looking for here? Bad ground at the block? Rig ran fine 2 months ago...sat in our barn for around 3 1/2 weeks untill the trip back to Boone, then things started acting up?

All this is on a 92 4.0HO from an xj laredo

TIA

I don't have a clue, but I will have a sssweeet 4.0 for sale soon that has 0 issues, good luck

Cleaned grounds from alternator to block, frame to block, and battery to block.

Tightened all electrical connections, checked bulkhead from computer that goes to alternator.

Everything is in order here....maybe I have a got a bad alternator??

Its a Jeep thing...I dont understand. Good Luck :flipoff2::gay:

Way to leave the bar Mr. Palmer :gay:
Gagen and I were still there, where were you?

Lol funds are way too tight to be buying another motor just bc of an electrical gremlin. I think I'm just gonna hire the energizer bunny to beat his drum for me everytime I want to go wheeling

new alternator probably toast....or VR

From what I can tell there is no fuse inline with the alternator. I had a friend(s) do the majority of the wiring on the 4.0, and he got rid of pretty much everything except for the necessities to have it run. I know in the xj before I pulled the motor, there was a fuse box under the hood, but he cut the entire loom out of the computer that went to the box when the motor was installed.

Unsure on the voltage regulator. I'm pretty sure we've narrowed it down to some wiring ghost but I'm about at my wits end on this one:shaking:

Have alternator checked, if it is good, I would look at wiring. Most likely no fuse, but instead maybe a fusable link.

Charging

Check battery cable ends if you still have the factory cable ends they are bad for corroding inside the insulation and breaking. Easy way to check is use a volt meter check voltage right off the back of the alt then check at the battery if big drop replace the cable i have seen this alot on jeeps.
