4.3 Vortec fuel issues

Got a 2001 S-10 Blazer with the Vortec CPI injunktion. Gets a fuel smell frequently, like, eye burning, in cabin fuel smell. And will randomly flood out and choke off while driving. Think it is most likely in the injector assembly inside the intake. Anybody familiar with swapping these out? I'm told the rails and injectors are available seperately now, any way to distinguish which is the problem before tearing into it? Any advice other than matches and insurance claims?

I had a 1993 CPI 4.3 Vortec in the YJ I used to have. I had the "leaky injector" problem. Mine would leak so much that it was hard to start. Pull a couple spark plugs and see if they are fouled. If so, I'd say you are going to have to replace the injectors. They come as 1 unit and look like a spider. It is a straight forward replacement. You have to take the air plenum off the top of the motor to get to all of it. While you have that off, you should go ahead and clean the EGR valve with some Easy-off oven cleaner. here are some part numbers that may help you, but remember, mine was a 1993 engine, so I don't know if it is different than your 1991. I might can find some pics too.

The injectors and the body (spider) are sold seperately now, gonna pull the plugs this evening and see if I can determine which or how many cyls are leaking. Is getting it in and out pretty straightforward or do I have a huge pain in the arse to look forward to?

It's easy. I think it was about 10 bolts or so to get the air plenum off. The injectors have squeeze tabs that you squeeze so you can pull them out of their holes and the spider has a couple bolts holding it in. The fuel regulator is in there too. You can tell if it is leaking by comparing the left side and the right side of the intake. If both look equally black and varnished, the fuel regulator is not leaking. If one side is black and the other side looks like it has been cleaned (looks like a brass color) then the fuel regulator is leaking. If I remember, it is cheap anyway, so you should go ahead and replace it while you have everything opened up. If you search some of the S-10 forums, you'll find pics of all of this. I can't find the pics that I took, I may have deleted them since I no longer have that.

Thanks man, I do have a couple of fouled plugs so I'm gonna tear into it this evening. It'll be nice to have the trucks that actual gets decent mileage back on the road.
