...I know this is kinda a retarded question:rolleyes:. But i'm looking for some feedback. I'm about to setup a pair of axles and I already have a 4.88 r&p for my front axle, but still need to buy some for the rear axle. I'm trying to keep cost down and want to run at least 38's with a AW4 (4speed). It'll see some highway travel to get to the trails. I've run the same setup before with 5.13's and it did great on the highway and good in the rocks. Will I really notice a difference with the 4.88's on the trail...enough to want to sell the 4.88 and buy 5.13s??? Am I going to kick myself later on when I go to 40+ with the auto and 4.88's??? What would you guys do. :huggy:

It's not that much of a difference... and depending on the axle, the 4.88 may be stronger.

One of my buddies running a YJ/4.0/5-speed had 4.88s running on 35s. Stepped up to 5.13s to run 38.5s and said it wasn't quite enough. The physical weight of the tire starts coming into play with tires this big, not just the diameter vs. gear ratio. If you don't care about acceleration so much it will probably be fine, but as far as your transmission is concerned it will be working harder so you might want to look into a bigger cooler or something to keep it happy.
