I work for Duke Energy, but they are not my service provider, so no coupon for me. :shaking:

Remember that CFL's only save you money if you turn them on and leave them on at least 15 minutes at a time. Otherwise they cost more to use and they burn out faster. It takes more energy to turn them on than to leave them on for 15 plus minutes.

....and when you throw them out you put more heavy metals in the landfill (mercury) along with all the other crap that goes in the ballasts. They are only made in China so they had to waste a lot of fossil fuels to get them here so it is a farce that they really save anything. It is just a ploy to make the consumer feel "green" while reducing the load that power plants have to baseline off of (and why Duke and Progress et. al. want you to buy them). I see the crap on TV, in the stores, on the radio, billboards, even on a damn sticker on the front door of a Subway in Yanceyville. Everyone is acting like they are saving the world by using those stupid things.

I have NO CFLs in my home and do not really intend to purchase any. If I am not in a room, I do not have a light on it in. Pretty simple really. I have dimmers in all my bedrooms as well as the dining room so I can adjust the light output and save money when I do not need the bulb at full blast.

If you really want to save some energy, turn your thermostat up in the summer time and down in the winter. Or spend some greenbacks on adding insulation to your attic. Get a thermal blanket for your water heater.

CFL technology is really nothing new. Its a flourescent bulb and ballast, its just self contained and screws into a regular light socket.

I do have a problem with the mercury waste generated by them and the "it's not a problem" attitude about it. "They" say for homeowner/residential purposes to just double bag them in grocery bags when you throw them away and no worries. However, we (at work) have to treat them as hazardous waste and can't throw them in the trash. You can't have it both ways.

If every bulb is eventually going to be flourescent, there needs to be more available ways for the average end user to dispose of them. IMO
