Anyone know of a test that I can preform at home on a 4l60 to determine why it will not shift into 3rd. History: 95 Yukon, swapped transfer, drove it for a couple of miles then the torque converter unlock on it. Had to limp it home in second gear. Fluid was low, filled it, no difference. And to top it all off, its not mine. Neal

I've had that happen before...The 3-2 downshift solenoid went out on it, so it kept the tranny in 2nd gear in "limp-home mode." Not sure how to test it. But maybe that will give you some info to google.

My ingition module went on my truck and would only take off in second unless manually put in first and also wouldnt shift above third, and always ran with the converter unlocked.

the trans computer defaults to that when electrical problems arise. Could be almost anything. If the fluid is low enough, it will determine that the ratio between input shaft speed and output shaft speed were not right, and "lock's it up" in second gear. Make sure fluid is topped off. Disconnect bat cable for a couple minutes to reset computer, and try again.

Being a '95, it should be OBDI, and you shoud be able to buy a cheap code reader at the parts store.

What is it when your drivin down the road and hear a sound like 2 gears tryin to mesh gets worse when you turn but doesnt do it as much or at all when goin straight. Heard it might be trans case but not sure. I also put my foot on the brake and hit the gas a little just to see and it made a big pop sound with a grind!!

Any takers on this one?

Sorry for the hi jack

Thanks guys, I am going to disconnect the battery today for a couple of hours, to see what happens. If that doesn't work then I am going to borrow a scanner. Rokntoy I would check the transfer and the rear diff. Pull the plug and see how much metal comes out. It will at least let you know what area the problem is in. Neal

This might sound dumb but is the speedo working? If it isn't the trans fuse could be blown. The truck will go int limp with the fuse out. Also a good way to get out of tickets!!!!

Will so far no luck. Its going to a tranny shop to get checked out. This one is doing the same thing as bcammons did. We'll see in a week. Thanks Guys. Neal
