I put my xj in 4hi yesterday morning in the snow and it started bucking like an angry bull. I was on the road but driving in a straight line. The only thing I could think of was at some point in time the gears were changed in one of the axles, and not the other, or maybe the front drive shaft is binding since it's lifted 8". Any suggestions on what or how to check it out?

Pull the diff covers and count the ring teeth and divide them by the number of pinion teeth to find your gear ratios. If you don't have a vac disconnect on the front axle then the fron DS is spinning all the time and you would feel the bind even in 2wd. You might also put jackstands under the axles and get all four tires off the ground and put it in 4wd and let the wheels spin SLOWLY to see if theres any bind in the front DS.

I didn't try 4lo, I just put it back in 2wd, I had to get to work. It drives fine in 2wd. I'll try to check the gear ratios this weekend, although spare time is short with 2 kids under 3.

Different gear ratios. Been there after another shop replaced an axle.

a local guy went to the beach with that problem (unknowingly) and completely broke off the pinion when he put his in four wheel drive. Different gear ratios.
