Before I start taking things apart could someone offer an opinion? Fired up the YJ last night and went for a short ride, for one reason or another it hadn't been on the road for 7 months. Everything worked great except when I shifted into fifth gear and let out the clutch nothing happened. No noise, no rough shift, just nothing but the motor revved. Down shifted just fine. The transmission was rebuilt 2 years ago and has less than 20,000 since. Makes no sense to me, losing 5th just sitting around. Any ideas?

maybe a shift rail issue????

Agree with shift rail issue...

If your gearbox uses shift rails, the fork usually is positioned on a detent in rail and secured with a set screw. Set screw came loose? Most likely since it was recently rebuilt.

Have you looked at where the shifter business end sits in transmission? Bushing may be worn or screwed up to the point that you can't access 5th.

My $0.02

Which tranny? ax-5 or ax-15? Some times the c clip that holds the 5th gear on the shaft will break and the 5th gear will walk off it a bit.

x2 ghost
I went to have my tranny rebuilt but the guy told me that my shift rail was worn down so I just bought a new one. Prolly your cheapest bet also

Thanks to all you guys. Guess my Saturday morning is laid out for me. Unless "She who must be obeyed" has other plans.

If it's an AX-5 then there is a good probability that the retainer clip has broken and the gear has slid up the shaft. It's common for that to happen. 5th is in the back half of the case. I've heard of some people tack welding the clip on when they repair it.

This has been a on going issue with the ax-5's for ever. I think from the factory, the snap ring groove isnt cut deep enough, so it is very easy for the snap ring to break off, come off, or just fall off. Sometimes when it does, it will chip some of the splines, making it difficult to install another snap ring, and having it stay put. So, It is common practice, rather than junk the whole trans, to tack the gear to the shaft, 180 degrees from each other. This seems to work forever, as long as the rest of the trans holds up. I havent seen this happen to the ax 15's near as much though.
