found a pretty good deal on a 06 ford f-250 6.0 the only thing i've done with diesels is cummings. i've heard good and bad things about the 6.0. what have you guys experienced? whats the mpg like stock. any major problems or things to look for? thing only has 52k on it and is super clean

i personaly have a 7.3....but a few of my buddies have 6.0s and about all of them have had problems, all but one anyways....from what i can tell, if you keep it stock then you wont have a problem, as far not keeping it stock, i wouldnt unless you want problem

Thanks for the input. As far as I know it's stock. What's the quickest way to tell if somebody had a programmer or chip in it and took it back out?

well for one, gauges usually mean that whoever had it might have had something done to it....not saying that this is always the case but for the most part....other than that, its hard to tell, ecspecially if they had a programmer they could have put it back stock and you would never know it. But if that trucks only got 54k and it looks mostly stock then i wouldnt think they would have done anything, just my opinion though

The biggest thing with the 6.0s is regular MAINTENANCE! My whole wheeling crew runs 6.0 tow rigs: my early 03, two 04s and an 06. The oil HAS to be changed EVERY 5000 no more or you will kill injectors. Mine has had a tuner on it since 11,000 miles, it now has 188,000 miles. I have the stock head gaskets and bolts. It had one EGR cooler put on at 52,000. Thats the only problem I've had that I can actually blame on Ford.

I have blown up a turbo and killed 10 fuel injectors (in a year and a half span, replacing 2 to 3 at a time a few months apart as it would start skipping when cold) but I was running a REALLY Hot race tune (supposed to be +160 HP) and starving the injectors for fuel (after I checked the fuel pressure I found it dropping off at WOT). I took the race tune out and have run the +65 hp tow tune since April 2010 and haven't killed an injector since.

Go check out www.thedieselgarage.com they have an excellent and rather busy 6.0 forum, you can read up on these motors a little more on your own.

Thanks that's helpful

Most of the 6.0 problems can be fixed for a lot less than 3k for new heads, etc.

One of the biggest issues is clogged EGR coolers caused by Ford misapplying there universal Gold coolant.Get that shit out of there, flush the coolant system and put a good ELC coolant in there. Dont flush it with just water use someting to break it down.....Cummins/Fleetguard restore and restore + work well

While you are in there some would gut the EGR system...but that would be illegal so I would leave it....

Keep the oil changed as mentioned.

that said, I wouldnt have mine if not for the deal I got...and Ford did buy one back from me with less than 20k on the odo
