OK BOUGHT A 94 CHEVY 3500 DUALLY FOR A TOW RIG, HAD IT A FEW WEEKS NOW, HAS RAN GREAT UNTIL TODAY. STALLED THREE TIMES ON ME TODAY WHILE GOING DOWN THE ROAD, CAME HOME ABOUT 3PM AND WAS GOING BACK OUT TO GET STUFF FOR DINNER AT 4PM, WHEN I WENT TO START IT IT WOULD CRANK THEN DIE, IT DID THIS 3 OR 4 TIMES THEN FINALLY STARTED BUT WAS ROLLING WHITE SMOKE EXCESSIVELY OUT THE EXHAUST, MY 1ST THOUGH WAS WEAK GLOW PLUGS SO I LET IT IDLE FOR 20 MIN TO LET IT REACH TEMP.. NEVER CLEARED OUT AND STUMBLED BADLY UPON ACCELERATION, NOW IT WONT START AT ALL, I HAVE NOT CHECKED ANYTHING YET BECAUSE OF THE RAIN SO ANY POINTERS OR SUGGESTIONS WILL BE GREAT, GONNA TRY AND WORK ON IT IN THE MORNING, I HAVE A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE OF DIESEL BUT NOT ALOT, I WORKED AS A MECHANIC AT A SHOP THAT DID WORK ON DIESELS 3 OR 4 YEARS AGO BUT MOSTLY WORKED ON GAS ENGINES, THEY HAD A DIESEL GUY THERE FOR THEM.

The stalling would lead me to belive it could be the PMD (pump mounted driver) Is yours still located on the intake manifold or has it been relocated yet?

Welcome to the world of 6.5L's Mine has been driving me nuts ever since the day i bought it.

The owner of the company that I was working for bought a 6.5 box truck.....The mechanic was happy and pissed off at the same time. It had low miles but was a guttless turd. He has to work on it a few times a week.

mine is still on the pump have not relocated it yet, i knew that this was a common failure but like i said only had it for a little while, also i tried to start it today, it actually started but was still doing the same thing as yesterday, the weird part was when i shut the key off the truck would not shut off, had to pull the ecu fuse to get it to shut down, wtf??????

Not sure about the not shutting off part. If you want a 2nd one to work on i'll sell you my basket case ;)

hope this helps my dad has a 6.5 i tow my rig with and his did the same thing we replaced his pmd with there heat sync pmd box and it works great. you can also call them tell them what is going on and 9 out of 10 times there right on the money they now there 6.5s.

Hey man, mine was doing the same thing but without the white smoke and not turning off. I took it to two different chevy places and neither one could figure out what was wrong and it cost me too much money. It turned out to be my PMD. I got it from ssdieselsupply.com, if you read the description they will tell you some of the symptoms, it takes about 20 minutes to install and just requires some simple tools.

relocate it to somewhere other than the engine bay. The heat from the engine kills them.

x10 on the pmd. get the pmd/heat sync. combo from ssdiesel. also look into their cooling fan upgrade. i have the full ho cooling setup but if i had it to do over id just do a 97+ho water pump and fan. hope you get the bugs worked out cause their actually good engines if you keep them cool and dont try to get 400 hp. out of it. (300 is safe)

x100 I can say with 99.9% accuracy that its the PMD. I know guys that have their's remotely mounted yet still carry a spare in their tool box just in case. Its better than it leaving you stranded. Like someone else said they can be good dependable motors if well taken care of and not made into something it's not. My 6.2 had 300k on it and ran like a champ. I just knew what it's limitations were.

my new 6.5 broke the crank shaft at 12k..............
Heath Diesel .com has the best PMD kit well worth the money, i have installed at least 15 and never had one come back and he is way knowledgable. random cut off PMD lots of white smoke is a timing issue and not cuttig off. could be the pump. I have the factory scan tool to set timing and diagnose. it probably ahs some codes which would lead you in the right direction

well i in a diesel lots of things can cause white smoke, but i am leaning towards the injection pump being bad along w/ some pump driver problems as well, and the no shut off i am going to diagnose today think it is the shut off solenoid located on top of the pimp, anyone have a good pump and pmd they wanna sell?

There is a lift pump under the drivers side . it looks like a fuel filter with wires in it I have seen these go bad and cause stalling and no start . The worst would be the injection pump failed
lift pump is good checked it out yesterday, putting out adequate fuel amount.

my pmd on my truck is trying to go out its starting to cut out on the top end so i called heath diesel and they told me it just my pmd going bad just got to love a 6.5

if i could get the big slut to durham i would be happy to let you scan it unfortunately my trail rig cant pull my tow rig, it is a crew cab dually 4x4, lol, pile 'o' :poop:

Done been through this before i got a Dmax. Optical cam sensor in the fuel pump.

I think my injector pump is going out or the optical eye is dirty or the IP timing is off. I'm going to tear into it before too long, unless I get lucky and a freakin tree falls on it tonight...Come on big wind!!!
