someone needs to look at one in store (no info online) says voltage: 208/240

sounds like 3 phase
 
single phase. my compressor says the same thing.

No, 208 is a distinctly 3 phase voltage.
Depending on phase configuration (WYE or Delta) you can have 3 phase 120/208 or 120/240

Of course 1-phase is 120/240 (or 110/220 depending on who's nomenclature you are talking about)

Yes, and no. I have seen 208 come out of a Delta config x-former. Why? I'm not sure. I didn't dig any deeper than that. I've wired up single-phase welders that had a jumper setting for 208. Even if you have three phase coming into a building, you can still run single phase accessories off it. All you need is one of the phases and a return.
 
Got mine today, well, got it ordered. They were out of stock so I paid for it and used the 10% coupon. The cashier said the sale ends the 24th.
