7.3 auto transmisson not shifting

truck has sat since early Friday. it has been in the low 20s since then for highs. I'm thinking the cold is causing it to not shift and it to slip. it also will shutter once It finally does shift. only thing done to the transmission is a 6.0 cooler, I think I just undid where it ran threw the radiator. it seemed to drive fine Friday and the other times I drove it last week. the only time it acted like it was wanting to shift gears was when I was in 1st gear trying to get back home and the trans got up to about 145 degrees. it normally runs about 100-110 when not towing with the new cooler. it was also low added some and topped it back off but no change In the way it is acting.
 
Back in the day my dad had a 96 power stroke service truck and they left the shop one morning and went down the road toward the interstate didn't make it had it towed to ford dealer if memory serves me right there was some kind of valve inside that closes to heat it up quicker and it got stuck closed I don't know if it helpful to you but maybe it's some info that maybe could be useful
 
It's at home now going to wait till about mid week to try to drive it again when its been above freeing for a couple of days hoping its just the cold messing with it
 
Take a fluid sample with the dipstick and wipe it on a clean white cloth. Look for clutch debris on the cloth. This will tell you a lot...

Fluid was clean from what I could tell. It was low which I didn't know of and was surprised by that but I checked it and seemed fine topped it off and no difference I'm really hoping it is that's its just been so cold and not moved in so long. Maybe it got some moisture in it since it was so low and it caused something to freeze stuck? Idk I'm just hoping lol
 
My nearly-new Chevy decided not to shift a couple weeks back when it was in the teens here for a few days. It had cold-soaked two days at those low temps and one of the solenoids got stuck. Threw a code a locked out the transmission in 3rd gear; I had to use my scan tool to clear the fault and get the thing working again. Has not been a problem since but I thought it was REALLY odd since I had never heard of one getting stuck in a gear due to the cold.
 
When you try again let the truck run for a while to really warm up. let the truck run in neutral so it circulates the tranny fluid. Ford may already do it, but I know older dodges don't circulate fluid in park.

No its ran threw the external 6.0 trans cooler. I'll check that out tomorrow when I look at it. Is the connector on the top or directly on the side

From what I could tell it wasn't leaking while running...
Goes into reverse and acts fine. But it in drive and rpms rise with gas and nothing happens. Put it in 1st and it shutters and rpms jump around, 2nd gear less shuttering but more rpm jumping around.
I'm assuming the rpms jumping is the converter slipping
Made it about 25 yards then backed it back to the house and figured I'm looking for a transmission now
 
Wanna sell it as is? Is it 4wd? short or long bed? Milage?
 
Gotcha there! Me neither.

Buddy using mine now in place of his Tundra, doesnt want to give it back he loves it so much. We'll find him one.
 
Ya it was at the body shop two weeks ago and the guy gave them my number and i got no less than 6 calls trying to buy it. I'll just bite the bullet and get a built trans for it now and be good another 300,000 miles
