A buddy's truck shut down on the side of the road. I had read about the CPS crapping out without warning and told him to try that first. He popped one in from Autozone for 30 bucks and problem solved.

I got to thinking about mine and not wanting to change it at the wrong time, so I did a little research.

"They" say the improved blue cps from International is the best one, improves fuel delivery, timing, increased power and mileage. Well maybe...

I just stopped in my local friendly International dealer and they have two part numbers. He said to check the serial number on the engine to determine which one is correct. They look identical. One of the part numbers is apparently the improved one according to the interweb. They list em for a couple bucks more than Autozones ones!

Then I also have read that an even better CPS is made by Borg Warner and is readily available at O'Rielys.

Anybody have $0.02 on this subject?

The difference in the one's from the dealer is that one has a brass shim kit the other does not. I have used those and the auto parts version with the same results all on the 7.3's and the dt466's! Also have got a few from int dealer over the years that were bad parts!

Mine has been doing the random hesitation/stall crap for a week now. Still has never been addressed under recall and just havent had time for the stealership to fix it. They want me to leave it for a few hours. Told em I know how easy it is to change and a few hours is BS. Just gonna go back and ask for the damn thing and put it in myself.

There's a pretty big thread about this on Diesel Stop. A guy at work just went through the same deal with his 99 F350. His would die when the windsheild wipers were on. He had used a BWD from Advance Auto. They suck, everything I've ever used from BWD failed or flat out didn't work right out of the box....

Anyway, there's a black one and a gray one. They say one is more reliable, yet the other idles better. Something to do with the type of pickup used in the sensor. Both are a International or Ford part. Many people keep an extra one in their glove box. Must just be one of the joys of owning a 7.3. Just comes with the territory it seems.

I haven't used one since ford addressed the issue and came out with a cheaper one but its sound advice to carry one in your glove box. Its one 10mm bolt and a plug, some times you may need a flat screwdriver to work it out.

The ones I've used always were black and came from Ford, Never had any weird running problems out of them.

Borg Warner is a good one if you look at some of the (aftermarket) 7.3 cps the magnet on the tip of them is off center
if you can find a ford black one it is the best one riffraffdiesel use to sell them i would try to call them & see if he can still get them

I found the Borg Warner one locally. I will post up how my friends truck runs with the improved IH one. He said it runs like :poop: currently with the gray one from autozone.

The Ford Black ones are the older ones that they say are more prone to quitting. Ford has since replaced with the grey ones and the die hard Ford guys don't like them, say they don't run as good. We had a 7.3 rollback that I couldn't tell a difference from the dk. blue one from IH and the Black one but the Grey one sucked.

For what it is worth, according to my friend, the improved International CPS is great. Smoother idle and waaaay faster throttle response. The test vehicle is a '95 model F350 with a TS Chip and he keeps it on 100hp.

Had mine taken care of along with a recall on the cruise control harness at Keith Hawthorne in Charlotte today. In and out in about an hour. No clue which CPS they replaced it with but I will probably be picking up the improved International one to keep in the glove box. With the new PHP Chip on 80hp I dont notice a difference in throttle response so far with the new CPS.
