Seems like my EGT's and trans temps are running a little higher than usual on my psd when towing(tuner set on 60 horse tow).I realize the trans temps are affected by traffic, outside temps, ect, but what do you feel is a "safe" temp.If mine gets to 200 I'm shutting it down.It hasn't happened but a couple of times and both times I was towing,up hill, thru a construction zone.It don't just instantly heat up to that temp it just slowly creeps up and I know its because theres not enuf air passing over the cooler at low speeds.

MY EGT's run 900-1100 towing and I try not to get much past 1100,turbo only boost about 15 psi due to leaking up pipes but I'm about to change the factory donuts to bellowed pipes so it should fix the lo boost and help lower the EGT's some. The question is what is considered a safe temp on the egt's???

This on a 01 CC SD PSD with a 6 position DP tuner, straight exhaust, aftermarket air filter.and a Tom woods valvebody in the trans, otherwise its all stock.

If the probe is pre turbo 1200 egt is considered max safe longterm temp usually, you can go higher for quick spikes say 30 seconds or so, but the higher it goes the quicker you should back off. As far as trans temps I can't say on the older 4 speeds, my last truck was a manual 6 speed, the new 16 f250 runs 200-205 trans temp empty in town per the dash and 205-210 towing 18500 gcwr so far per the digital readout on the dash. Generally 250 is when the fluid starts breaking down, remember it's running through the radiator on most vehicles although it's on the cooler side of the radiator it won't be unheard of to run trans temps near engine temp.

Yeah mines pre turbo in the back, bottom side of the ds manifold. If I'm about over the hump it might flash at 1300 but then I'm getting out of the OD or backin off the fuel.Mine might be thru the rad also but I know is has a cooler on the outside of the rad.

Go the advance auto and buy a trans cooler and put it in line with your stock cooler. After I did that mine ran around 140° and 170° towing the 4runner. I think your EGT's are fine but you really don't know what they are till you fix the leaks...

Replace all the external coolers with a 6.0 transmission cooler. That thing is huge, it looks like an ac condenser!

The 6.0 intercooler is a common and fairly easy swap too. It is bigger than the 7.3 one and good for some lower egts but it's plastic and aluminum. I'm not sure how the 7.3 one is made.

Pick up a 6.0 transmission cooler for sure. All my research on my excursion transmission pointed that being better than any aftermarket option.

Too bad it's a pain to execute on an obs. My 97 wishes it had an intercooler when pulling blk mtn. Got to settle in at 35+ mph and pull 950 egt in 3rd while dragging 8k up it at 2200 rpm (TS chip at 75). I'm fine on the flat or hills, but that mountain is a test of man and machine...if some thing ain't 100%, you will know it.

That's the truth! I usually go to Harlan and take i77 up fancy gap to avoid black mtn.

All you need is a sawzall, a torch, and a welder, LOL

I've thought about it several times, but in the end I have other battles to fight. In the end, I get up that mountain only a couple minutes behind someone who is holding 60+. Plus my rig is 100% reliable considering it's age. AND, I have vent windows :flipoff2:!

My wheeling rig has vent windows (when the doors are on it). I don't need them in the tow rig because I keep the ac set on meat locker [emoji23]

Better safe than sorry cutting your truck off early since both items are a temp overtime deal but ive hit 1450-1500 for a few seconds on my 7.3 with no ill affects and held 1300 for a long period. Also imjust waiting for a reason to go to a t4 setup.
