OK, I got a '00 7.3

If I'm driving on level road say 40-45 mph, just enough throttel to maintain speed. If I back off the throttle slighty, or ease in slightly I hear what sounds like "bearing whine" it kinda sounds like a power steering whine only higher pitch. If I play with the throtle anough, I can maintain the "whine" but it is hard to hear. It seems to be worse cold.

Under heavier throttle it's quiet. It still pulls good and no other noise.

At one point, the truck did sit for about 5 years. Durring that time it only had about 1000 miles put on it. Since I've had it, I have had to replace a power steering pump and a few seal related part failures.

The whine sounds like its just in front and in the middle of the dash. But, being under the hood it's hard to tell where exactly it's comming from.

Any ideas?

I know you said around the dash but check your idler pulley. I think i have the same exact problem right now...ha.

Determine whether it is tied to engine rpm or load.

You can also wiggle the impeller shaft on your turbo and see if you can make it hit the housing. If so, replace it before it goes boom.

I've tried to duplicate the noise at higher and lower speed, also in lower gears at the same RPM, nuthin

It only seems to do it under verry light load, while easing into or out of the throttle....

Mine makes a similar noise like a whirring or bearing going bad type noise. Does it right when I let off throttle then gets less noticeable as speed goes down (like coasting), if I get back into throttle noise goes away. Sounds like my noise comes from transfer case or maybe tranny.

As said already just pull the intake boot of a check the turbo end play. you can tell by hand visual if its bad already (scoring on the housing and maybe a messed up wheel) but you should be able to check it with a feeler gauge, I'm sure the specs are on the web somewhere.

If it checks out start looking at your pulleys next. Or get a good sound clip of it. Most turbos I've heard going out are really high pitched like running your finger around a wine glass.

I played around with gears and speed on the way home.

I can duplicate the noise in 3rd gear as 5th well. Some where between 1300 & 1700 rpm.

Kinda looking like a main shaft bearing.

Thanks novacane. But I still think its turbo related. No its doing it in every gear change. When you push in the clutch, and when the rpms drops, at about 1500 rpm I hear the whine.

I am a powerstroke tech and Green Ford in Greensboro NC and to be honest I hardly ever see turbo problems out of the 7.3s. Hell I hardly see any problems at all other then the normal oil leaks. If you think it is the turbo it would be a good time to upgrade to a better turbo. A good turbo to go with is the GT38R ball bearing turbo which is complete bolt on and play setup and makes great power. You will see around 100 horse and 200 ftlbs of torque gain with the right intake, exhaust, and see even bigger gains with a great programmer. And dont worry the engine can take it with no problem

Right now I got a super chip & 4 inch exhaust. I like the idea of a bigger better turbo. But wouldn't I need to upgrade the injectors also?

I was looking at a garret with the wicked wheel upgrade.

You can upgrade injectors if you want and you can make even more power. With the turbo I am talking about and the horse power numbers I gave you was on stock injectors. With stage 2 or stage 3 injectors you can make will over 500 and right at 1200 ft lbs of torque at the wheels!
