I have a 1997 XJ with 8 inches and 35's currently I have an 8.25 rear which has been welded. . . Looking to go with 4.56 gears. . .should I just buy a dana 44 while I am at it? ? ?

You really won't be gaining much, if any, by going from a 29 spline 8.25 to a 44.

Just stay with the 8.25.

I'd go with the 44, you have more gearing options, non c-clip, no bearing issues to worry about and more after market support.

Thanks for all the input

True, but if I already had a working 8.25 it would tough to go to a D44, Just stick with the 8.25 and sooner or later you will want tons and you can save the money for that.

I found an option where I got a 44 with 4.10s/discs for cheaper than I could get R&P for my 8.25 which has ZJ discs, and I sold it to fund the swap... I wouldn't have swapped for lack of confidence in the 29-spline 8.25 though, I flogged mine and its still in great shape.
