hey guys. i know my fair share about XJs but im sure there are alot of people on here who have alot more knowlege than i do. i will try to keep this short but ive got a few questions. within the next few weeks my xj will be at about 8 inches of lift (6.5 inch coils and ACOS spacer, and 6.5 inch leaves with 1.5 inch shackle) it will have the RC control arm drop brackets with most likely upper and lower control that are good for up to 6.5 inches of lift (can not afford long arms at this time due to being a college student). im also going to order an adjustable trac bar from rock krawler that is good up to 8 inches it says.
-i guess my question is does this sound like a good set up for now until i am able to get long arms?
-will i be able to get it pretty close to a perfect alignment?
-and by any chance will a adjustable trac bar for up to 6 inches of lift work and still be able to get close to perfect alignment
-is there anything else anyone can think of that i might need?

My jeep as of now

Holy crap 8.5" of lift. Just not needed.

OK so before you start you need a plan.
What type of wheeling?
What tires?
What axles?

Too many people just start off building something bigger because that is what they think makes a better wheeler do and it looks cool.

Btw 4.5 inches of lift and 36's in this picture.

What the hell u trying to fit under this jeep? 44's? Iv owned 5 differnt XJ's all w/ sum sort of lift, unless ur going 1-Ton axels and 44's theres no need for 8+" of lift hell even then u dont need all that lift, and Drop brakets for Control arms??! SCARY! Iv had 3" w/ 34's, 4.5" w/35's, 2" w/ 31's, no lift w/ 31's and now 3.5" w/ 33's & I think its about perfect. The lower the Center Of Gravity the better, and if your going w/ sum huge ass tire that means ur going to need sum new gears as well to keep mpg's and keep it happy on the Highway.. My 2 cents

I agree that there is not a need for that much lift BUT if you are set on that much lift, then you are in for a lot more expense than you think.

If this is a DD, then that much lift on short arms is going to ride like crap and not have any flex.

Like above, what size tire do you want to run? What axles do you have? What gear ratio do you currently have and what do you plan to go to? What is the purpose of the XJ (DD, trail only, etc.)?

well see as of right now ive got right at about 6.5 inches with 33s with no trimming and it doesnt rub. ive got an sye and tom woods driveshaft. right now i have the control arm drop brackets with 3.5 inch lift fixed lowers and stock uppers. ive also got the rustys adjustable trac bar which is good for up to 5 inches of lift. mostly everything has been installed professionally and my jeep rides great on the road. no vibes or anything like that. my goal is to be able to fit 35s and be able to keep the stock flares with minimal trimming. i plan on adding1 inch blocks and crank my adjustable spacers some more. the only problem is that when i got it aligned, they couldnt get it perfect but they got it as close as they possibly could. i need to be able to get it as close to perfect alignment as possible and i was thinking with the longer adjustable control arms in addition to the drop brackets and the new trac bar that is good for up to 8 inches i would be good. maybe im wrong? any suggestions?
Thanks

i dont know how to post a picture on here but i will do it if someone tells me how just so you guys can see where my jeep sits as of now

Ok...I have 8" lift on 38s with major trimming.....no sye, just tcase drop and extended drive shaft with 8.8 in rear....with rockrawler triple threat 3 link LA's...Im building 60s F&R and plan on running 40s-42s and ima lower min back down to 6.5"

From my experience of 8-8.5" lift.....it looked cool flexed great...BUT SUCKED ON HIGHWAY and WAS WAYYYYY to top heavy....Plus I kept having track bar problems and ended up making a 1 ton track bar setup.....

my suggestion to you is dont go over 6.5" with short arms....you will hate it!!!

remember the sawzall is ur friend and key to running big tires....also bumpstops!!!

just my .02

i appreciate all the help guys... so what if i stay right around 7 inches (where im at now) and use the 6.5 inch adjustable uppers and lowers with the control arm drop brackets and the 6.5-8 inch adjustable trac bar i would be ok? would that help out with my ride quality on the road since right now i have the 3.5 inch lowers and stock upppers? anything else i would need? would i be able to do 35s with not too much trimming?

There are so many things that come to mind.
1. What axles are you running?
2. Plans for gears?
I won't knock your plans since I ran 5" lift and 33's with cut fenders on stock axles and short arms. I kept breakin my lower control arms and got mad and made my upgrade to Radius arms and axles. My build is on here somwhere.
I have 10" of lift on 38.5's. I use it for mud and rock crawling. I run a 44 front and 9" rear. Open front and spool in the rear. I have a set of chromoly shafts and CTM u-joints for the front that I need to get put in soon

alright so i decided im going to leave my jeep like it is and just do longer control arms 35s. no more lift. am i going to absolutely need new axles or gears? or will i be ok leaving everything the same without messing anything up? i am on a budget and a college student. plan on going from 33 mtz radials to 35 baja claw radials. Please help any input would be great!
Thanks,
Travis

oh and as of right now this is my DD. i guess you could call it a mall crawler for the time being so maybe wheeling every once in a while

i would imagine that they are 3.55s its a 2000 auto. this is just an educated guess but i think thats right! and i think i have a d30 in the front and the 8.25 rear? i havent had any problems with my 33s and i figure 35s wouldnt be too much more stress on the axles?

On the street your axles with 35's would be fine . I would check the front Axle joints you want the bigger joint axle shafts like the ones here .

You will want to regear the Diffs .
Here is a good chart to follow . it recommends 4.11 or 4.56 for 35's
