my xj has an 8.8 swapped into it when i got it, it has disk brakes. is there any easy way to tell if it is a 28 or a 31 spline axle without pulling the shafts and counting the splines?

Not really, but chances are it will be 31 spline. If it is an Explorer 8.8, it will be 31. Drop the cover and pull a shaft to see.

I'm not 100% sure... But I think the explorers were the only ones to get discs, and explorer rears are all 31 spline.

First gen Explorers with drums were 28. It seems there is a particular model year where 28 spline with disc was available. I've never seen one first hand however. All I have seen is 31.

The Ranger Station FAQ says they're all 31spl, regardless of year. <shrug>

chances are, you have an explorer rear, however, to be completely correct, crown vic's came with 28 spline and rear discs, but the housing would be wider and the ratio would be numerically lower
