I was wandering ifany one had any experience choping and cuting tubes\knuckels and welding them in the front. Like could i buy a 8.8 and retube it and get some innershafts made and use a dana 30 outers or some other 5 on 4.5 pattern. will a 8.8 drive foward if turned around? which way does the drive shaft turn in the front as opposed to the rear. just brain storming

Why?
If you're going to that much trouble, just put a "proper" high pinion front axle in there.
That would be a LOT of trouble, to end up with an odd customized solution you'd never be able to get parts for if it broke.
At least my two cents on it.

No offense but I would consider that to be an enormous waste of time. If you started with better axles it would be different but neither are know for being strong.

It's be easier and in the end probably more cost effective to find a used Rubi 44 front.
x2 with a good truss if you are trying to stay simple and 4.5 bolt pattern but 8.8 i dont rec. for anything hangs to low for 35s and cant be shaved and if your going bigger its strong but their is better for cheaper

sounds like your trying to make peice of shit. Why not just go with a 44

What they said. Why? It would be much weaker than an hp 44, while far far more expensive. Buy new wheels and put a real axle in the rear, or live with what you have now.

I have a new Rubi 44 front housing I would be willing to sell. I can set it up with gears and everything if you want. Buy a good set of axle shafts and you would be good to go.

not to step on Andy (im sure you'd get a great deal from him) but i think mopar is releasing the rubi 44 for under 2grand with locker and TJ brackets.

my details could be fuzzy, i skimmed over the article at the grocery store and it's of no importance to me but i thought it was cool jeep was doing that.

well i am good for now. I have a 8.8 in the rear and a hp dana 30 in the front (4.88)that i have done some trusing on so i guess if i do any thing else it will be 30 spline carrier and chromoly shafts. what size tires could i run with a locker and smart driving? 37's?? ..........I dont know this thread was just something that crossed my mind. See like most you guys out there I have more time then money.

FWIW, I run a locked, LP 30 with 4.88s and 36" SXs on the stock 27 spline shafts, and spot welded caps with some smart driving and some not so smart. I've only broken one shaft. YMMV. It's not totally impossible that you'd be able to run 37s if you're smart. Just don't launch the front end with the right foot on the floor.

the 8.8 has a very low pinion like a 9" which makes matters worse in the front for clearance and dshaft angle. The only way I would do this is if I had free ARB and R&P... nahhh, still wouldnt do it

Its a lot easier to change a shaft then a ring and pinion on the trail. If you do the 30 spline shafts you move your weak link to a much more expensive and hard to change place. Keep your stock shafts and don't put any money into it.
