I am trying to find out if all 96-2000 explorers had the 8.8 axle in them or do I have to find a V8 explorer? Look at my thread D35 and MTZ 35's don't mix and you will know why I am asking.

My apaulogies if this question has been asked before I did a search and could not find a thread with this info. I am about 5 days from being laid off so I am looking for cheapest fix I can for my jeep. I have found several explorer axles for a good price just don't know if the 6 cylinder has the 8.8.

All of the 95 through I believe 01 explorers have the 8.8 no matter what engine. However on the v8s you will be more likely to find the 4.10 gears and limited slip.

kerrekt. Anything from '95 until they went IRS will have disks and 31 spline shafts, no matter what engine was in it. The v8 mountaineers did come with 4.10s and a lsd. I'll bet the explorers were the same. If money is that big of an issue and you find the drum braked explorers are cheaper, you can go that route. If an 8.8 comes off of an explorer, it WILL have 31 spline shafts. Sure, the disks are more desirable, but the drums work fine as well.

The reason I was asking is I have found a alot of 96 - 2001 4.10 locked axles with in about an hours drive of me for less then $200.00. But they are all out of the 4.0 explorer so I just wanted to make sure for that price they were the 31 spline 8.8.

The other question I have is when the salvage yard advertises it as locked do they mean limited slip or did the Explorer come with a locker option during those years? Seems kind strange to have a explorer have a positive rear end in it.

I just pulled a 8.8 on Friday for a whole 42.80 when I got back to my job with it it has 4.10, limited slip. I installed it in my 96 ZJ after work on Saturday and finished it last night. I have found every Explorer 8.8 I have pulled or pulled shafts from have all be 31 spline. I have on that came out of a 93 limited slip 3.73s(been re-geared to 4.10) and mounted Grand Cherokee disk brakes on it.

THey all should be. There were variations in the sport tracs and rangers, but the explorers and merc mountaineers will all be 31 spline, regardless of what brakes are on them.

Most Rangers I have seen have the 7.5 rear.

Fair point. The few that do have the 8.8 are likely to not be 31 spline. When looking for 8.8s, I don't even bother with rangers, mustangs or any of the fullsize cars. Explorers or Mountaineers are where I look. That way, I know what I'm getting. Hell, I'm in the mood to build another 8.8 with all of this axle talk. Or, maybe I should find a 9" for myself and sell my 8.8.

All 4wd rangers that have a 4.0 and 4wd have 8.8's in them, most 3.0's 4wd's have 8.8's also, most are open diff's but some do have l/s. If you'll look on the axle tag it will have the gear ratio on it and if it has limitited slip it will have an L in it for example 3L73 instead of 3 73. The tag will also have the ring gear diameter on it also either be a 7.7 or 8.8.

All rangers even with an 8.8 are only 28 spline axles. Unless you run across an 99 and up fx4 4wd ranger then it will have 31 spline axles, a limited slip, and either 4.10's or 4.56 gears.

Should we just put up a link to the JU 8.8 stickly?

Thanks for all the replies it is nice to know how to find what I am looking for. I beleive I'll avoid the rangers and just get the explorer axle. Probably will drive the extra distance and get the limited slip version.
