8.8

just about any locker that replaces the case on the 8.8 is a good upgrade. the main weak point of the 8.8 is the carrier and center pin. upgrading this problem is a good idea. lockrights tend to be a bad idea as they place even more stress on the already problematic carrier and center pin

I have been running a lock rite in my 8.8 w/ no problems ...yet.
I know it is weaker than a full case detroit or the like, but oh well..gotta run what I brung.

Lock-Right worked fine for my son in his 8.8 with 33"s. I think as long as you stay in that tire size range you shouldn't have any problems with the 8.8/LR combo. Just my experience anyway.

I am about to run an aussie (same as a lock-right) in my 8.8 with 35"s, anyone have any experience with that combo? Am I setting myself up for failure?

Metto is right, the carrier is the weak link and putting a lockright style locker in the weak carrier does put more stress on it. I have Detroit's in both my Jeeps, w/8.8's, and have thrashed the TJ for years with no issue. After about four years driving my ZJ on the road and some light wheeling I still don't have any problems with it either.
The cost difference in a lunch box locker to a Detroit is a jump but it's cheaper than recovering from carrier failure.

FWIW, I didn't like the Detroit I had in an 8.8 I had in an XJ. Just my experience. I could not justify the added expense of the Detroit over a LR again. My .02, your experience may vary :)

I've had no issues from either Detroit. I am running 37x14.5's on my TJ and 33x12.5 on my ZJ. As with any locker it will change how the vehicle drives, with the exception of he selectable lockers. I notice it mostly making left turns while really on the gas. I can be VERY hard at times on my Jeeps while wheeling and I went with the strongest component I could afford, I would prefer an ARB or OX just for the convenience of switching the locker on and off but I could not justify it for the rear. I do run an ARB in the front of my TJ and It has taken plenty of abuse as well. As always do your research and try to make an informed decision, this is just my experience. Maybe others will chime in and elaborate on their wheeling styles and their experiences.

I just broke the carrier on my 8.8 at URE yesterday. Luckily the breaks were smile shaped so I was able to drive it home to G'boro. I found the break today. The Powertrax is still intact so I may offer it up to anyone who doesn't want to pay $489 for a new Powertrax for an LSD.
I plan to order an Ox this week.

1999 Explorer.
When I take it out I'll get some pix of the carnage and post a link to the pix.

another question: how much higher will an 8.8 swap in a tj generally net? (bumper to ground difference)

think of stock suspension on a tj with an 8.8 swap, I'm trying to figure out how much the front will need to be lifted to level it out. since the front rake is about an 1" to begin with, I'm thinking 1.5" - 2"

The axle tube is about a half inch larger diameter than the D35.
I think the MORE mounting kit accounts for that. Not sure though since I have a YJ.

If I find that the Powertrax is still completely intact, I will post it for sale here.
I'm getting the next Ox for the 8.8 of the factory line.
